Talia Al Ghul: Wild Orchid ANIMATION
The Alizarin Mimic
The scent of crushed oleander always preceded her, a fragrant warning that death had arrived in silk and shadow. But this evening, as Talia al Ghul stood amidst the velvet ruins of the Gotham Opera House, the scent was wrong. It was too thick, laced with the metallic tang of oxidized copper and the cloying sweetness of rot. Beneath her feet, the stageboards groaned, not under her weight—which was as light as a predator’s sigh—but under the burden of a masterpiece she had not painted.
In the center of the stage, suspended by piano wire that glinted like frozen lightning, was the District Attorney. He had been meticulously disassembled. Not hacked, not butchered, but unmade with the surgical precision of the League of Assassins’ most sacred ritual: The Opening of the Lotus. Each incision was a testament to a geometry of pain that Talia herself had perfected in the pits of Nanda Parbat. But she had been in London for a fortnight, and she did not kill for sport.
"A touch derivative, don't you think?"
The voice vibrated from the rafters, low and heavy with a familiar, brooding authority. Talia didn't turn. She smoothed the front of her emerald catsuit, her dark eyes tracing the way the moonlight caught the DA’s exposed ribcage.
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Detective," Talia said, her voice a cool cello melody. "But this is not flattery. It is a smear. A child scrawling in the margins of a holy text."
Batman dropped from the darkness, a cape-shadow that swallowed the light. He landed without a sound, three paces behind her. He didn't approach the body. He watched her. The cowl’s white lenses were unblinking, analytical, and colder than the December wind howling through the broken skylight.
"Three victims in forty-eight hours," Batman said. "All killed using the Ubu grip. All positioned according to the Levantine Code. And all of them people you’ve had reason to despise."
Talia finally turned, her lips curving into a smile that held no warmth. It was a beautiful, dangerous thing, like the edge of a sharpened diamond. "If I killed everyone I despised, Bruce, the world would be a very quiet place. And I would certainly start with someone more interesting than a civil servant with a gambling debt."
She stepped toward him, the distance between them shrinking until she could smell the smoke and Kevlar that clung to him. "You know my hand. You know the way I pivot my wrist when I draw the blade. You’ve felt it against your own throat. Look at the DA’s sternum. The cut is too shallow by a fraction of a millimeter. It was done by someone who knows the what, but not the why."
"The 'why' is framing you," Batman countered, his voice a gravelly rasp. "The 'what' is that the League is being blamed for a resurgence of ritualistic terror in my city. If it’s not you, Talia, then who is your shadow?"
"A ghost with a grudge," she whispered, her hand rising to brush against the scalloped edge of his cowl. He didn't pull away, a silent admission of the gravity of the situation. "Or a student who thinks the master is growing soft. My father’s house is full of vipers, but even they wouldn't dare this level of... kitsch."
Before he could respond, a soft, wet sound echoed from the wings. It was the sound of a brush being dragged across wet canvas. From the darkness emerged a figure that made Talia’s breath catch in a way that had nothing to do with desire.
The woman who stepped into the spotlight was a mirror reflected in a pool of blood. She wore the same emerald suit, her dark hair cascading in the same obsidian waves. Her face was Talia’s—the high cheekbones, the almond-shaped eyes, the regal tilt of the chin. But where Talia’s skin was vibrant with the life of the Lazarus Pit, this woman’s flesh looked waxy, like a funeral shroud stretched over a skull.
"I thought you’d appreciate the tribute, Mother," the mimic said. Her voice was a distorted echo of Talia’s, a recording played through a dying machine.
Batman stepped between them, his gauntlets clicking into a defensive posture. "Who are you?"
The mimic tilted her head, a bone-cracking movement that was entirely inhuman. "I am the consequence of perfection. When you carve a statue, you leave behind stone dust. I am the dust that learned to walk." She looked at Talia, and her eyes—entirely pupilless and milk-white—began to weep thick, alizarin crimson tears. "You are becoming a memory, Talia. A footnote in the Detective’s journal. I am the reality of the Ghu
