Supergirl: The Shattered Sky ANIMATION

The Valkyrie of the Shattered Gate

Kara Zor-El had never imagined that cold could feel sentient. She had flown through blizzards, fought ice-powered tyrants, even crossed the vacuum chill of space. But none of that prepared her for the night Metropolis’s sky cracked open with rips of spectral frost.

She had been descending over Midtown when she saw it: a shimmering wound torn above Centennial Park—like a mirror cracked from within, shards hanging motionless in the air. From the center leaked a sound like a distant horn, both mournful and triumphant, as though announcing an arrival no one wanted.

People below stared upward, frozen mid-stride, breath turning into tiny plumes.

Kara hovered, eyes narrowing. “This wasn’t in the Justice League emergency threads,” she murmured to herself, though her voice shook slightly. Something about the sound made her heart heavy, like forgotten sorrow.

A figure slowly formed within the rift, spectral armor shining silver-blue, hair like midnight silk trailing weightlessly. The woman was tall—taller than Kara—and radiated a pale luminescence.

When she spoke, the wind itself seemed to hush.

“Daughter of distant suns… I know your radiance even across realms.”

Kara tightened her fists but held her ground. “Identify yourself. Now.”

The figure smiled, and even from afar Kara felt the strange charm of that smile, something alluring yet mournful.

“I am Astrid Draugrsson,” she said, “Valkyrie of the Phantom Gate. A sentinel once. Now… something less certain.”

Kara’s chest tightened. Phantom Gate—like the Phantom Zone? But this wasn’t Kryptonian technology. It felt ancient, older than any Earth myth.

“You came through a breach,” Kara said carefully. “That shouldn’t be possible unless—”

“Unless the gate was shattered,” Astrid finished softly. “And so it was. I am not the only escapee… merely the first.”

The chill deepened around them.

Kara’s instincts screamed danger, but her curiosity whispered something else. Astrid’s presence wasn’t aggressive—it was sorrowful, seductive in its vulnerability.

“What do you want here?” Kara asked.

Astrid studied her, as if reading every memory behind Kara’s eyes. “A warrior must claim the worthy when their time comes. But I sense in you a life not yet lived. A golden promise unspent.”

A flicker of warm dread threaded down Kara’s spine.

“You’re talking like you’re supposed to… judge me.”

“Not judge.” Astrid drifted closer. “Guide.”

Kara hovered backward. “Guidance from ghosts rarely ends well.”

Astrid’s smile was faint. “I am not a ghost.”

Another sound echoed from the rift—this time a low, ancient chanting. Something strained against the edges, as if more figures were trying to push through.

Kara’s pulse leapt. “I need to close that breach.”

Astrid looked toward the tear. For a moment, something like panic flickered in her eyes. “If you seal it now, you seal me here. I am not acclimated to this world. I will… unravel.”

Her voice trembled, and Kara couldn’t tell if it was manipulation or genuine terror.

Kara swallowed. She had seen monsters play weak, but this felt different.

“We’ll find another solution,” she said, though uncertain.

Astrid’s gaze softened. “You would help a stranger rather than condemn?”

“That’s kind of my thing,” Kara whispered.

Astrid reached out, a spectral hand brushing air inches from Kara’s cheek as though afraid to touch her. “You shine brighter than battle legends foretold. A warrior… yet merciful.”

Kara drew a sharp breath, forcing her heartbeat steady. She suddenly felt far too warm.

“Flattery won’t get you citizenship papers,” she muttered.

Astrid’s laugh was gentle, melodic, and somehow… lonely.

Hours later, the breach still pulsed above the park like a bruise against the night. Astrid had descended, walking as if gravity puzzled her.

Kara stood nearby, listening as Astrid spoke of phantom realms—neither life nor death, but places where fallen warriors were once guided.

“We were guardians,” Astrid said. “But when the gate shattered, order fell with it. Some who wander through will bring ruin. Madness. If I do not find the cause, they will devour your world.”

Kara studied her. “Who shattered it?”

Astrid’s eyes darkened. “A presence hidden beyond reach. I sensed only its
