### Stejas Mustvau: The Escort Mission
The stark white armor of Stejas Mustvau gleamed in the dim light of the ruined cityscape, each step she took echoing ominously through the war-torn streets. Her helmet visor reflected the fires that still smoldered in the distance, the remnants of battles long since passed, and the once-bustling metropolis had become nothing more than a hollow shell—a graveyard of twisted metal and crumbling concrete.
Stejas moved with a soldier’s precision, her blaster rifle gripped tightly in her hands, ready to respond to any threat. But this was no ordinary mission. She wasn’t just another stormtrooper in the Empire’s vast army; she had been tasked with something far more important. The man she escorted was not a high-ranking officer or a fellow soldier, but a scientist—one whose knowledge was said to be critical to the Empire’s continued dominance.
Dr. Erasmo Drayven was his name, a man of middling height with a nervous energy that seemed to radiate from him as he skittered along beside Stejas. His round glasses were slightly askew on his nose, and his once-pristine lab coat was now stained with the grime of their arduous journey. His hands trembled as he clutched the datapad to his chest, a device that held the key to a technology that could shift the balance of power in the Empire’s favor. But none of that mattered if they couldn’t get him to safety.
The air was thick with tension, the kind that made every sound seem amplified, every shadow a potential threat. The city was occupied by forces loyal to the Rebel Alliance, and they had no intention of allowing Drayven to escape with his secrets.
Stejas had been trained to handle any situation, her mind and body honed by years of rigorous discipline. But even she could feel the weight of the task ahead. The path they had to take was treacherous, filled with dangers both seen and unseen. And the further they ventured into the city, the more apparent it became that something far darker lurked in the shadows—something that defied explanation.
The first sign had been the silence. In a city of this size, even one ravaged by war, there should have been some noise—distant explosions, the hum of machinery, or the murmur of the few civilians who might still be hiding. But there was nothing. It was as if the city itself had died, its lifeblood drained by some unseen force.
Stejas didn’t let her unease show. She was a stormtrooper, after all, and fear was a luxury she couldn’t afford. But Drayven was a different story. His eyes darted around nervously, his breath coming in shallow gasps.
“Keep moving, Doctor,” Stejas ordered, her voice firm but not unkind. “We’re almost to the rendezvous point.”
Drayven nodded quickly, his fear palpable. “I… I don’t like this place,” he muttered, his voice barely audible. “It’s too quiet.”
“Stay focused,” Stejas replied, scanning the ruins ahead. “We’ll be out of here soon.”
But even as she said the words, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The city had been abandoned by the living, but the dead… the dead were another matter entirely.
They reached a narrow alley, one that cut through the heart of the city like a wound. The walls on either side were scorched and pitted with blaster fire, and the ground was littered with debris—broken glass, twisted metal, and, disturbingly, the occasional scrap of clothing or personal belongings, as if the inhabitants had been snatched away in the midst of their daily lives.
Stejas kept her blaster ready, her senses on high alert. Every instinct told her that they were being watched, but by what, she couldn’t say. The shadows seemed to shift and move, forming shapes that danced at the edges of her vision, only to disappear when she turned to face them.
Drayven stumbled over a piece of rubble, nearly falling to his knees. Stejas reached out, steadying him with one hand. “Careful,” she said, her voice low.
“Thank you,” Drayven mumbled, wiping sweat from his brow. “I just… I just want to get out of here.”
“We will,” Stejas assured him, though she wasn’t entirely sure she believed it herself. The alley stretched out before them, a narrow corridor of darkness that seemed to stretch on forever. But they had no choice; it was the quickest route to the extraction point.
They moved forward, the silence pressing in on them like a physical force. Stejas’s breath was steady, her heartbeat controlled, but inside she was on edg
