Moonlight slicked the city streets like spilled mercury, catching the neon glow of Los Angeles in fractured prisms. Jennifer Walters, better known as the emerald-skinned heroine She-Hulk, navigated the rooftop labyrinth, her long legs silent against the cool tiles. A niggling unease gnawed at her, a tremor deeper than the city's usual heartbeat.
It wasn't a siren's wail, the rhythmic thump of club music, or the distant rumble of the freeway. It was a pulse, subtle and insidious, emanating from somewhere within the concrete and chrome sprawl. She'd felt it first a few nights ago, a chilling ripple that sent shivers down her spine even in her gamma-infused form. Tonight, it was stronger, a bass note thrumming in the air, vibrating the bones in her skull.
Following the rhythm, she crouched on the edge of a skyscraper, her crimson eyes scanning the neon jungle below. The pulse seemed to intensify around a sprawling gothic mansion perched on a hilltop, its dark silhouette against the moonlit sky radiating an unsettling aura.
Memories flickered in Jennifer's mind, whispers from the dusty corners of her legal career – rumors of eccentric billionaires, forbidden rituals, and gates to dimensions unseen. Could this be the source of the city's unease? A shiver, more from curiosity than fear, ran down her spine. She-Hulk loved a good mystery, especially one wrapped in the morbid glamour of old money and occult secrets.
With a silent leap, she landed on the mansion's wrought-iron balcony, the pulse thrumming stronger with each step she took toward the ornate double doors. As she touched the cold metal, a jolt of energy shot through her, the pulse amplifying into a cacophony of fear – raw, primal terror emanating from within.
Taking a deep breath, Jennifer reached for the doorknob and threw the doors open. The mansion's interior was a grotesque parody of luxury. Dust-coated cobwebs draped crystal chandeliers, and shadows twisted on velvet carpets like tormented wraiths. The pulse echoed through the cavernous hall, a symphony of nightmares conducted by an unseen hand.
Suddenly, a chilling whisper slithered into her ear, "Welcome, Jennifer Walters. Welcome to the feast."
She whipped around, but the voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. A cold tendril of fear snaked around her heart, but Jennifer, She-Hulk, wasn't one to surrender to chills. Her emerald fist pounded the floor, the mansion trembling in response. "Show yourself, you spectral skulker!" she roared, her voice echoing through the halls.
Silence. Then, a ripple in the air, and a figure materialized in the gloom. It was a woman, ethereal and beautiful, clad in a swirling gown of moonlight. Her eyes, deep pools of obsidian, held a predatory hunger, feasting on the fear Jennifer, despite her bravado, couldn't entirely suppress.
"I am Nyxus," the woman purred, her voice a velvet caress laced with razorblades. "And you, She-Hulk, are the main course."
Jennifer narrowed her eyes. "Are you the one feeding on the city's fear? What are you?"
Nyxus smiled, a cold, predatory curve. "I am the echo of anxieties, the whispers of nightmares made flesh. I thrive on the city's terror, its unease, its delicious despair."
"And you thought a big green lawyer in a skirt was your main course?" She-Hulk smirked, her claws extending with a satisfying crackle. "Tough crowd, sweetheart. You haven't met L.A. traffic."
With a roar that shook the chandeliers, Jennifer lunged. Nyxus, however, was a phantom, a figment of collective dread. She shifted through Jennifer's attack, leaving the She-Hulk grasping at empty air. Worse, with each touch, with each frustrated punch, the pulse intensified, the city's fear feeding the wraith like an intoxicating elixir.
Panic gnawed at Jennifer's edges. This wasn't a brawl, not a puzzle to be solved in court. This was a battle against an entity fueled by the darkest corners of the human psyche. She needed leverage, a way to fight back against the tide of fear.
Then, a thought, sharp as a courtroom dagger, pierced the fog of panic. Fear wasn't just Nyxus's weapon, it was her lifeblood. Jennifer couldn't fight the fear directly, but she could…divert it.
With a mischievous grin, she turned to Nyxus, her voice dripping with mock terror. "Oh no, you've caught me! I'm so scared…of paperwork! Mountains of contracts, endless depositions, jury duty on Mondays…it's enough to make anyone scream!"
She launched into a mock tirade
