Kitana, princess of Edenia, her steps echoing against the cold, polished marble floor of the Royal Palace, wasn't herself. Her sapphire eyes, usually sparkling with determination, were clouded with a growing unease. A haunting melody, unfamiliar yet strangely alluring, had woven its way into the palace halls, pulling her deeper and deeper into its grip.
This wasn't a court musician's nightly serenade. The melody, played on an instrument Kitana couldn't name, held a dissonant harmony, a discordance that sent shivers down her spine. It spoke of forgotten memories, of a past life she couldn't quite grasp.
Ignoring Jade's worried pleas to turn back, Kitana ventured further, the melody growing stronger with each step. She found herself in a forgotten wing of the palace, one draped in cobwebs and shrouded in dust. The air hung heavy with an unsettling silence, broken only by the mournful notes that tugged at her very soul.
Reaching a set of double doors, ornate and long-barred, Kitana paused. The melody seemed to emanate from behind them. Her hand hovered over the rusted iron lock, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Despite the dread gnawing at her, she pushed open the doors.
The room beyond was bathed in an eerie, ethereal glow, emanating from a single, flickering torch on the wall. In the center of the room stood a grand piano, its ebony surface gleaming despite the dust-laden air. It was here, before this instrument of forgotten beauty, that the melody reached its crescendo.
As the final note faded, the silence that followed was deafening. Then, with a horrifying crackle, the air shimmered, and a figure materialized before the piano. Tall and gaunt, shrouded in shadow, the being radiated a malevolent power that pressed down on Kitana, stealing her breath.
Its eyes, glowing embers in the darkness, locked with hers. A cold dread washed over Kitana, a sense of recognition so profound it felt like a blow. This being, this entity of pure shadow, knew her in a way she didn't understand.
"Kitana, princess of Edenia," it rasped, its voice a chorus of whispers that echoed in the chamber. "You have finally returned."
Kitana forced her voice past the lump in her throat. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The entity chuckled, a sound like dry leaves rustling in a dead wind. "I am a fragment of your past, princess. A memory buried deep, hidden from even your own mind."
Panic clawed its way up her throat. Hidden memories? This was madness. Yet, the entity's words held a chilling truthfulness. The melody, the dissonant harmony, it stirred something within her, a yearning for a life she couldn't recall.
"What memory?" Kitana demanded, her voice trembling.
The entity glided towards the piano, its touch leaving a trail of inky shadow on the ivory keys. "The memory of who you truly are, princess. Not just a princess of Edenia, but a daughter of Darkness."
The words struck Kitana like a physical blow. A daughter of Darkness? It was a lie, a fabrication. Edenia was her home, her light. Surely, this entity was twisting truths to control her.
The melody started again, this time laced with a chilling discord, filled with images of a past she didn't recognize. Burning cities, screams of the dying, a throne of obsidian carved from the skull of a fallen god – these were not memories, but nightmares.
Kitana clutched her head, the melody assaulting her senses, the images flooding her mind. Suddenly, everything shifted. The grand chamber dissolved, replaced by a battlefield drenched in moonlight. She was surrounded by countless figures, their faces hidden in shadow, their eyes glowing with malevolent flames.
A blade, cold and heavy, appeared in her hand. She fought, her movements imbued with a power she didn't understand. But with each blow, with each life she took, a cold, chilling darkness seeped into her soul. The melody became a battle cry, a chorus of hatred and despair.
Then, as abruptly as it began, the illusion shattered. She found herself back in the dusty chamber, the entity watching with amusement. Exhaustion overwhelmed her, a cold sweat clinging to her skin.
"You see, princess," the entity rasped, a triumphant note in its voice. "The darkness is in your blood. You cannot escape it."
Kitana wanted to scream, to deny the horrifying truth she'd glimpsed. But a part of her resonated with the entity's words. The memory of the battlefield, the hu
