The night was as black as pitch, the only light the occasional flicker of a torch mounted high on the walls of the enemy stronghold. The massive stone structure loomed in the distance, its jagged spires reaching up toward the sky as if to claw at the heavens. A biting wind cut through the valley, howling across the craggy rocks where a small band of warriors crouched in the shadows, led by none other than Red Sonja herself.

Her fiery hair, typically a bright flame in the sun, was hidden beneath a dark, worn hood, though even that couldn’t fully mask her fierce beauty. Her piercing green eyes scanned the fortress, her expression one of calm, cold calculation. Sonja had been in countless battles, faced innumerable enemies, but tonight was different. This wasn’t just another raid. This was vengeance.

"They’ll see us if we move any closer," one of her men whispered. His voice trembled slightly, a testament to the fear that permeated the air.

Sonja didn’t respond immediately, her eyes narrowing as she considered the defenses. The stronghold was heavily fortified, just as she expected, with guards patrolling the walls and hidden traps likely strewn across the approach. The fortress had long been a place of fear and death, home to the sadistic warlord Kraldar. He had terrorized villages for years, leaving a trail of destruction and suffering in his wake. It was said he dabbled in dark magic, drawing his power from the shadows of the night itself.

This stronghold was where he had taken refuge, and it was here that Sonja had sworn to bring him to justice—or die trying.

"It’s not about getting close," she finally replied, her voice as sharp as the blade on her hip. "It’s about being smarter than them. They’re expecting a direct assault. We’ll give them something else entirely."

Her plan was simple, yet brutal: an assault that would come not from the front, but from beneath. Kraldar had built his fortress on the bones of an ancient catacomb, a network of tunnels long forgotten by most, but not by Sonja. The stories of those tunnels were the stuff of nightmares, filled with whispers of restless spirits, undead horrors, and worse. Few who ventured into the depths ever returned, and those who did were often broken, their minds shattered by what they had seen.

But Sonja feared no ghost, no demon that lurked in the dark. She had faced monsters of flesh and bone, creatures from other realms, and had come out alive. Whatever horrors the tunnels held, they would not stop her.

"Are the men ready?" Sonja asked, still staring at the fortress. The wind whipped through her cloak, sending a chill through the night.

"They are, but…" Her lieutenant hesitated, glancing at the others. "The tunnels, Sonja… They say there’s something down there, something worse than Kraldar. It’s said that the dead don’t rest easily in those depths."

Sonja turned to face him, her expression hardening. "Let them come. The dead can’t kill me any more than the living can."

Without waiting for a response, she led her band down a narrow path hidden by jagged rocks, taking them toward the entrance to the catacombs. The closer they got, the more oppressive the air became, as if the very earth beneath their feet was alive with malice. The entrance itself was little more than a dark hole in the side of a cliff, barely wide enough for a man to fit through.

One by one, they descended into the darkness.

The air was cold and damp, the stench of rot and decay thick in the tunnel. Their torches flickered weakly, casting long, eerie shadows on the walls as they moved deeper into the catacombs. The tunnels twisted and turned, a labyrinth of stone and bone, the silence broken only by the occasional drip of water or the sound of their footsteps echoing in the darkness.

Sonja was at the front, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword, her senses sharp and alert. She could feel the presence of something else in the tunnels, something ancient and angry, watching them from the shadows. But she pushed the feeling aside, her focus on the mission ahead. They needed to reach the fortress’ foundation and plant the charges. Once the explosion went off, it would create enough chaos for them to storm the gates and finish Kraldar.

But as they ventured deeper, the atmosphere grew more oppressive, the air thicker with a strange, otherworldly energy. The tunnel walls seemed to pulse with life, and whispers—faint, barely audible—began to fill the air, as if the very ston
