Cassie Cage had faced a lot of things in her life: Outworld invaders, mercenaries, even gods. But none of that prepared her for the cold, creeping dread that clawed at her now. She stood in the center of an endless, dark void—no landmarks, no light, nothing except the suffocating weight of fear pressing down on her from every direction. It felt wrong, unreal. Like a dream.

She didn’t know how she got here, but the weight of her dog tags resting against her chest grounded her slightly. The subtle clink as they shifted with her every breath was a reminder of who she was. Cassie Cage. Special Forces. The woman who could take on a legion of warriors and not flinch. But now, she was in a place where nothing made sense, where the rules of reality no longer applied.

"Alright, Cage," she muttered to herself, trying to maintain her bravado. "Just a nightmare. Nothing you can’t handle, right?"

Her voice echoed back to her, distorted, like the void was mocking her. She clenched her fists, summoning her strength. She had been trained to fight through fear, to push past the mental games her enemies might play, but this felt… different. This wasn’t some elaborate setup by Kano or another enemy. This was deep, primal, like something crawling out from her subconscious to tear her apart.

Suddenly, the ground shifted beneath her feet, the nothingness warping and cracking like glass. She stumbled, her combat boots slipping as the floor shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. Cassie fell, tumbling into a black abyss, her heart pounding in her chest as gravity pulled her down, down, into the endless depths.

Her fall stopped abruptly with a jarring thud as she hit solid ground. Gasping, she forced herself to her feet, wincing at the pain shooting through her back. The darkness around her seemed to pulse, the air thick with tension. The space had changed. She wasn’t floating in the void anymore.

Instead, she found herself in the ruins of a city—burnt-out skyscrapers loomed overhead, their windows shattered, the streets cracked and overgrown. There was no wind, no movement, just a stillness that made her skin crawl. But this wasn’t any city she recognized. It felt eerily familiar, yet horribly wrong, like a twisted reflection of the real world.

The silence was deafening, broken only by her own shallow breaths. As she took a cautious step forward, her eyes caught movement from the corner of her vision. She spun around, fists raised, but there was nothing. Just shadows, flickering and twisting like they were alive.

"Okay… officially creepy," she muttered, her voice lacking the confidence it normally held.

She began to walk, each step feeling heavier than the last. The city seemed to stretch infinitely in every direction, but no matter how far she moved, she never got anywhere. It was like the landscape was shifting around her, keeping her trapped.

Then, out of nowhere, came a whisper.

"Cassie…"

Her heart froze. The voice—it was her mother’s.

"Cassie…"

She spun in place, frantically searching for the source of the voice, but saw nothing. Only the shadows, still writhing and swirling around her.

"Mom?" she called out, her voice hoarse. "Where are you?"

"Cassie… why did you leave me?"

The voice was closer now, dripping with accusation. It was definitely Sonya Blade’s voice, but distorted, twisted into something grotesque. A chill ran down Cassie’s spine as the shadows began to take shape, forming figures in the darkness.

From the shadows stepped a figure dressed in the familiar green and black uniform of her mother. But her face was wrong. Sonya's eyes were hollow, her skin pale and decayed, like something that had crawled from the grave. Her expression twisted into a grotesque sneer as she stepped closer.

"You left me to die, Cassie," the figure rasped. "You were too weak to save me."

Cassie’s stomach twisted with guilt. Her mind screamed that this wasn’t real, that it was just the dream playing tricks on her. But the accusation hit too close to home. She had always feared failing her parents, never living up to their legacies, and now, it was her worst nightmare come to life.

"I didn’t… I couldn’t…" she stammered, taking a step back, her voice faltering as the specter of her mother advanced.

"You let me down," the twisted Sonya hissed, her eyes glowing with an unnatural light. "You’re a failure, Cassie. You’ve always been a failure."
