Seong Mi-Na: Windcut Traveler ANIMATION

The Weeping Pagoda of Gallow-Trees

Copper bells rang without a breeze, their tongues replaced by the calcified fingers of the dead. Seong Mi-na tightened her grip on Scarlet Thunder, the seasoned wood of her zanbatou’s shaft warm against her trembling palms. The air in the valley of the Gallow-Trees did not move; it curdled. It smelled of ancient silk left to rot in a butcher’s shop—sweet, metallic, and profoundly wrong. Before her stood the Pagoda, a structure that seemed to have been exhaled by the earth rather than built by men, its eaves curving upward like the jagged smiles of buried giants.

She had tracked the shadow of the cursed blade across the border, through the whispers of dying villages, to this forgotten crevice of the world. But she had not expected to find him here. Han-Guk, the man who had taught her the rhythm of the staff when she was barely tall enough to reach the weapon’s midsection, stood on the threshold. He had been her father’s most trusted lieutenant, the man who had promised to guard the Seong Dojo with his life. Now, he stood bathed in a violet luminescence that bled from the cracks in his armor.

Han-Guk did not move, yet he seemed to vibrate at a frequency that pained the eyes. His skin was the color of a drowned moon, translucent and stretched so thin that the pulse of something dark and viscous could be seen thrumming beneath his jaw. The sword he held was not a weapon so much as a scream forged in iron. It was a mass of organic horror, an eye embedded in its hilt that rolled frantically, searching for a soul to devour.

"You look tired, Little Sparrow," Han-Guk said. His voice was a discordant harmony, as if three different men were speaking through a single, damaged throat. "The road from the Seong Dojo is paved with the intentions of children. Did your father send you to die, or did you simply grow bored of safety?"

Mi-na took a step forward, the tip of Scarlet Thunder tracing a line in the black soil. "I came to bring you home, Han-Guk. Or to bury what’s left of you. The sword has turned your blood to ink. Look at yourself. You are a puppet dancing on strings of meat."

Han-Guk laughed, and the sound caused the nearby trees to leak a thick, black sap. He moved with a liquid grace that defied his heavy plating, closing the distance between them in a blur of indigo shadow. He didn’t strike; he simply circled her, the massive, pulsating blade held casually at his side. The eye in the hilt fixed on Mi-na, and for a moment, she felt a sickening pull in her chest, as if her very spirit were being dragged toward that lidless stare.

"You speak of puppets," Han-Guk whispered, his breath smelling of ozone and old blood. "But look at the world you defend. A world of fragile walls and aging masters who fear the dark. Your father hides behind tradition because he is afraid of the truth. The sword… Soul Edge… it doesn’t corrupt, Mi-na. It clarifies. It peels away the skin of the lie we call 'honor' and shows us the glorious hunger beneath."

He paused, his gaze raking over her with a terrifying, predatory intimacy. "You have always been the most vibrant of the Seong line. Why settle for the spark of a candle when you could become the conflagration? Join me. Not as a servant, but as a queen of the new epoch. We could burn the rot of this world together and build something that never has to die."

Mi-na felt a wave of unnatural heat radiating from him. It wasn't just physical; it was a psychological seduction, a promise of an end to the constant striving, the constant fear of failure. For a heartbeat, the weight of the zanbatou felt like an anchor she could simply drop. The mystery of the sword’s power beckoned—a fathomless well of strength that whispered her name in a thousand voices she recognized from her dreams.

"The conflagration burns everything, Han-Guk," she said, her voice steady despite the hammer-thud of her heart. "And when the fire is gone, there is only ash. I’ve seen the villages you passed through. There is no 'new epoch' there. Only silence."

Han-Guk’s expression shifted. The last vestige of the man she knew flickered and died, replaced by a mask of cold, alien hunger. "Silence is the only perfect song," he hissed. "If you will not sing it with me, you will provide the notes for my solo."

He lunged. The air shrieked as Soul Edge tore through it. Mi-na spun, the Scarlet Thunder whistling as it intercepted the blow. The impact was like hitting a falling mountain. Sparks of purple and crimson erupt
