Barriss Offee: Mask of Duty ANIMATION

The Obsidian Dirge of Acheron-V

The atmosphere of Acheron-V did not merely exist; it conspired. It was a thick, gelatinous haze of suspended hematite and pulverized bone, a lung-scouring mist that tasted of oxidized copper and ancient, forgotten grudges. Barriss Offee moved through the waist-high fog with the rhythmic, deliberate grace of a predator who had forgotten what it felt like to be the prey. Her tattoos, geometric and stark against her olive skin, seemed to throb in synchronicity with the moon’s erratic tectonic heart. Above her, the sky was a bruised tapestry of violet and bile. The twin gas giants, Oros and Typhon, were drifting into a slow, agonizing alignment. This was the Double Occultation—a rare celestial funeral where the suns were blotted out, leaving the world in a state of preternatural, freezing twilight.

"It is a beautiful grave you have chosen, Healer," a voice vibrated through the air, less a sound and more a tremor in the marrow of her teeth. It was a voice of shifting plates and grinding stones.

Barriss did not break her stride. Her cloak, tattered and stained with the soot of a dozen dying star-systems, trailed behind her like a funeral shroud. "I did not choose it," she replied, her voice a cool, melodic counterpoint to the moon’s groaning crust. "I was led here by the gravity of your hunger. There is a difference between a choice and a destiny, though both usually end in a shallow trench."

She reached the center of the Shattered Basin, a vast amphitheater of jagged volcanic glass that reflected the twin eclipses above. In the center stood the Beast. It was not a creature of flesh and blood, but a nightmare of geometry and malice—a towering silhouette of shifting obsidian shards, held together by an incandescent core of dying starlight. It had no face, only a vertical slit that bled a sickly, phosphorescent blue.

"Destiny is the lie the weak tell themselves to feel important," the Beast rumbled. It unfolded its limbs, sounding like a thousand crystal chandeliers shattering at once. "You are here because you are a void, Barriss Offee. A hole in the Force where a soul used to be. I am simply the thing that fills the emptiness."

Barriss stopped, her hand hovering near the hilt of her lightsaber. The weapon was a relic of a life she had discarded, a tool of a philosophy she had found wanting. Yet, here, in the shadow of the twin eclipses, it felt like an anchor. "You speak with the confidence of a god," she said, her eyes narrowing as the first eclipse touched the rim of the sun. "But I have looked into the eyes of real monsters. They don't talk as much as you do. They just eat."

The Beast glided forward, its movements defying the heavy gravity of the moon. "And I shall eat. I shall feast upon the guilt that rots within your chest like a canker. I can smell it—the smoke of the Jedi Temple, the screams of those you thought you were saving. It is a vintage of exquisite bitterness. Come, little Mirialan. Let us see if your spirit is as sharp as your betrayal."

The air grew cold enough to crack stone. The first sun vanished, swallowed by the obsidian disc of Oros. A spectral corona flared, casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to detach themselves from the ground and dance. Barriss ignited her blade. The yellow light hissed against the toxic mist, a lonely candle in a cathedral of nightmares.

"You speak of betrayal," Barriss said, her voice dropping to a whisper that somehow carried over the rising wind. "But I call it clarity. I saw the rot in the garden, and I pulled the weeds. If the galaxy chose to burn because of it, then perhaps it was always made of tinder."

The Beast lunged. It was not a physical strike but a wave of kinetic sorrow. Barriss flipped backward, her boots crunching on the glass, as a spire of obsidian erupted from where she had stood. She moved with a fluidity that was almost erotic in its precision—a dance of survival played out on a stage of annihilation. She slashed at the air, her blade carving a path through the Beast’s outer shell. The obsidian shards shrieked as they were vaporized, releasing a scent of ozone and ancient dust.

"Is that all?" the Beast taunted, its voice appearing behind her. "A flicker of light against the inevitable dark? You were a healer once. Heal this world, Barriss. Stitch the cracks in the crust. Close the wounds in your own mind."

Barriss spun, her cloak billowing like a dark wing. She parried a limb of jagged glass that swung with the force of a fall
