Spiderwoman: Shadowed Siren ANIMATION
Gossamer and the Grotesque
Blood tasted remarkably like copper pennies and regret, a fact Jessica Drew chewed on as she spat a crimson glob over the edge of the stone gargoyle. Rain did not wash away the scent of the Hollowed; it only made their sweet, rotting perfume heavier in the freezing midnight air. Manhattan sprawled below her, a grid of oblivious neon veins, while the true infection clawed its way up the gothic stonework of the cathedral.
She could hear them before she could see them. It wasn't the sound of footsteps, but a wet, rhythmic tearing, like cartilage separating from bone. The Hollowed did not climb; they undulated against the vertical surfaces, their human forms broken and rearranged by the parasitic entity that now wore them as fleshy suits.
Jessica pressed her back against the cold, wet stone, her crimson and gold suit blending into the shadows cast by the storm. Emerald bio-electricity crackled beneath her skin, a desperate heartbeat seeking release. She closed her eyes, inhaling sharply. Her own body responded to the terror, glands at the base of her neck flooding the rain-slicked air with pheromones. Intoxicating. Lethal. She smelled like a siren’s promise and impending doom.
"You smell of heartbreak and ozone, Jessica," a voice echoed. It did not come from a single throat, but spilled from the mouths of three dozen warped figures pulling themselves over the parapet. The voice was like velvet drawn over broken glass—cultured, ancient, and deeply hungry.
Jessica opened her eyes, allowing the ambient green light of her venom blasts to illuminate her face. She offered them a smile that held no warmth, only the predatory promise of an arachnid. "And you smell like a cheap funeral parlor, Valerius. Did you dress them up just for me, or is the shambling corpse look making a comeback this fall?"
The figures paused, their heads tilting at unnatural, impossible angles. The nearest one, a woman who might have been a banker hours ago, stepped forward. Her jaw was unhinged, revealing a throat choked with pale, luminescent silk. "They are merely vessels, my dear," Valerius spoke through her, the banker’s eyes rolling back to show solid, milky white. "Just as you are a vessel for that delightful poison coursing through your veins. Why do you protect them? These cattle below. They fear you. They scent the spider on you and they recoil."
"They don't know me well enough to fear me," Jessica purred, leaning forward. She consciously amplified her pheromones, weaving a heavy, hypnotic blanket of chemical desire into the wind. It was a dark seduction, a biological imperative that commanded attention. "But you, Valerius... you know me intimately now. And yet, you still brought a knife to a lightning storm."
The entity laughed, a wet, rattling sound that cascaded through the horde. More of them were pouring over the gothic spires, hundreds of them, a writhing carpet of displaced humanity. They moved with a disturbing grace, guided by the hive-mind of the Silk Weaver. "I brought an ocean to drown a spark, Jessica. Give in. Let me taste the emerald fire in your blood. Join the chorus. It is so very warm in the dark."
"I prefer the cold," she whispered, launching herself from the stone gargoyle. She didn't fall; she struck.
Her fists, wreathed in crackling bio-electric venom, connected with the nearest husk's chest. The concussive blast of green light illuminated the rooftop in a macabre strobe effect, launching the creature backward into its brethren. The smell of burning ozone and singed flesh violently overpowered the rotting perfume.
The swarm reacted with terrifying speed. Limbs elongated by the pale silk snapped toward her like whips. Jessica flipped backward, her enhanced agility turning her into a blur of crimson. She caught a stray arm, ignoring the sickening squelch of the silk-infested flesh, and channeled a focused burst of venom directly into the creature’s nervous system. It shrieked—a high, piercing tone that vibrated in Jessica’s teeth—before dissolving into a pile of smoking ash.
"Fascinating," Valerius murmured through the collective. Dozens of them lunged, a tidal wave of grasping hands and unhinged jaws. "Your biology fights the infection with pure energy. A beautiful immune response. But even the strongest immune system eventually tires. Even the most venomous spider can be crushed."
The mystery of Valerius was what had drawn her into this nightmare. Three days ago, prominent socialites had begun disappearin
