The Descent of Elista Hodoru
The stars shimmered with icy indifference as the Imperial shuttle hurtled through the atmosphere of an unknown planet. Fire streaked across the viewport as the hull groaned under the pressure of rapid descent. Inside the cockpit, alarms blared, casting a red hue across the confined space. Elista Hodoru, a stormtrooper stationed aboard the Vengeful Strike, gripped the armrests of her seat. Her helmet was off, revealing sharp features, sweat-slicked black hair plastered to her brow, and steel-gray eyes wide with fear.
"Brace for impact!" the pilot screamed over the cacophony, his voice hoarse from panic. The planet's gravity had caught them unprepared, pulling them into a deadly spiral toward the surface. A sudden jolt knocked the breath from Elista’s lungs as the shuttle shuddered violently, its wings shearing off midair.
For a split second, there was silence. And then, the world exploded into chaos.
The shuttle slammed into the ground with the force of a bomb, metal crumpling like paper. Elista was thrown forward, her safety harness biting into her chest, knocking the air from her lungs. She heard a sickening crack—someone's bone shattering—before darkness swallowed her.
---
She awoke to the stench of smoke and burnt electronics. Groaning, Elista opened her eyes, pain lancing through her skull. A wave of nausea swept over her as she unfastened her harness and staggered to her feet, her head spinning. The cockpit was a ruin of sparking consoles and broken glass. The pilot slumped over his seat, blood pooling beneath him. The rest of the crew hadn’t fared any better.
Elista’s heart pounded in her chest. She was alone.
Grabbing her helmet from the floor, she slipped it on, the familiar hiss of the respirator bringing a semblance of normalcy. But normalcy was fleeting. This was a crash site—her crash site. The rest of her squad was dead, and she was stranded on an uncharted planet.
Her body ached, but adrenaline kept her moving as she stumbled out of the shuttle and into the wilderness.
The planet was dense with strange vegetation. Towering trees with thick, jagged bark rose above her, their leaves glowing faintly in the twilight. Strange fungi sprouted from the ground, emitting a bioluminescent glow that bathed the forest in an eerie, green light. The air was heavy, humid, and thick with the scent of rot and decay. She heard unfamiliar noises from within the foliage—scraping, clicking, and distant growls. Something was watching her.
Elista scanned the area, instinctively reaching for her blaster, still holstered at her side. Her HUD flickered, but the atmospheric interference rendered it nearly useless. There would be no backup, no rescue. She was on her own.
With nothing but the wreckage behind her and the unknown ahead, she made a quick decision—survival was her only option. She needed to find shelter and figure out what had drawn her shuttle off course. More importantly, she had to be ready for whatever creatures might be lurking.
The thick forest pressed in around her as she pushed forward, her senses on high alert. Every rustle of leaves or snap of twigs set her heart racing. She had faced rebels, bounty hunters, and creatures across the galaxy, but this planet was different. There was something oppressive about it, something that gnawed at her nerves like a creeping dread.
The first sign of danger came as a faint hiss. Elista paused, turning slowly toward the sound. Her helmet's sensors flared briefly, catching movement in the underbrush. She aimed her blaster into the shadows, but saw nothing.
And then it struck.
A creature burst from the foliage—fast, too fast to follow with the naked eye. It was a predator, all sinew and muscle, with leathery black skin that shimmered in the dim light. Its maw opened wide, revealing rows of serrated teeth, and its yellow eyes gleamed with a vicious intelligence.
Elista fired instinctively, but the creature was upon her before the shot could connect. It slammed into her, sending her sprawling onto the ground. Pain shot through her arm as she hit the dirt, her blaster flying out of reach. The creature loomed over her, its breath hot against her visor. It let out a low, guttural growl.
She kicked out with her legs, catching it in the side, and rolled away just as its claws raked across the ground where she had been lying. Elista scrambled to her feet, her heart racing. She was unarmed, outmatched, and
