Hannah Dundee stood at the edge of a crumbling cliff, her fiery red hair whipping around her face in the ash-laden wind. Before her, a scene of destruction unfolded: molten lava spewed from the heart of an ancient volcano, darkening the sky with a thick plume of smoke. The ground trembled beneath her feet, sending rocks and debris tumbling into the abyss below. The air was hot, thick with sulfur, and the very earth beneath her seemed to be writhing in agony.
She hadn’t expected the expedition to take such a turn. What had started as a mission to recover ancient artifacts in the volcanic regions of the island had become a desperate race against time. Now, her goal wasn’t treasure or knowledge—it was survival.
A deafening roar echoed through the mountains, shaking Hannah to her core. The volcano’s eruption was intensifying, and the ground quaked with such force that even the massive, prehistoric trees around her began to sway and crack. In the distance, the molten rivers of lava that flowed down the mountainside glowed bright orange, cutting fiery paths through the thick jungle below.
Hannah adjusted her pack, filled with maps, tools, and the one artifact she had managed to secure before everything went south—a small, crystalline sphere that shimmered faintly in the dim light. It was supposed to be the key to unlocking secrets of the island’s ancient past, but now it seemed like nothing more than dead weight. She glanced at it briefly before shoving it deeper into her bag. Survival first. Answers later.
Her only option was to descend the mountain as quickly as possible. But the terrain was treacherous, and the jungle between her and safety was teeming with dangers—both natural and prehistoric. The dinosaurs that roamed the island were restless, their usual patterns disrupted by the violent upheaval of the earth. She had heard their calls in the distance, growing more frantic as the eruption worsened.
“Hannah!” A voice called from behind her. She turned to see Jack Tenrec, the grizzled mechanic and her longtime ally, sprinting toward her through the ash and debris. His rugged face was streaked with soot, and his usual calm demeanor was replaced with an expression of urgency.
“We have to move! The whole mountainside is collapsing!” Jack shouted over the roar of the volcano. Behind him, the ground continued to crack and split, sending rocks and boulders tumbling down the steep incline.
“I know!” Hannah yelled back, her voice strained. “We need to find a way down. Fast.”
Jack reached her side, his eyes scanning the crumbling landscape. “There’s a path that leads to the jungle floor, but it’s narrow. We’ll have to move quickly, or we’re toast.”
Hannah nodded, wiping the sweat and ash from her forehead. “Lead the way.”
Without another word, they began their descent. The path Jack had mentioned was little more than a jagged ledge carved into the side of the mountain. Loose rocks shifted beneath their feet with every step, and the heat from the lava below radiated upward, making it feel as though they were walking on the surface of the sun.
Every few moments, the ground would shake violently, threatening to throw them off balance. Hannah could feel the heat intensifying with each step, the air growing thicker and more difficult to breathe. Sweat dripped down her face, mixing with the ash and dirt, but she kept moving, her focus sharp.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them gave way with a thunderous crack. Hannah and Jack tumbled forward, scrambling to regain their footing as the ledge crumbled into the abyss. Hannah's heart pounded as she barely managed to catch herself on a protruding rock, her fingers digging into the stone.
Jack wasn’t as lucky. He slid down the slope, his arms flailing as he tried to grab hold of anything that would slow his descent. “Jack!” Hannah shouted, her voice hoarse from the ash and heat. She watched in horror as he disappeared over the edge, falling toward the jungle far below.
For a brief moment, time seemed to freeze. The world around her went silent, save for the roar of the volcano and the distant rumble of collapsing earth. But then, a familiar voice broke through the haze.
“I’m alive!” Jack’s voice called out, faint but unmistakable.
Hannah let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She quickly scanned the cliffside, spotting Jack clinging to a thick vine that dangled precariously from a tree rooted in the rock.
“I’ll come down to you!” she
