The sky above Outworld churned like a cauldron of fire and blood, swirling with dark clouds that reflected the endless battle raging below. The air was thick with the acrid scent of ash and decay, a stench that clung to the skin and filled the lungs with every breath. Screams echoed through the vast wasteland, the cries of warriors and beasts locked in combat, their blades and fists striking in deadly rhythms.

And there, in the midst of the chaos, stood Jade.

The emerald sheen of her armor glistened beneath the fading light of the blood-red sun, her face a mask of steely resolve. Her bo staff, slick with the blood of her enemies, gleamed ominously as she paused to catch her breath. Around her lay the bodies of countless foes—soldiers from Shao Kahn's endless army, monstrous creatures that had fallen by her hand. Yet despite the victory, there was no joy, no sense of triumph in Jade's heart.

Her sharp eyes scanned the battlefield. To her left, the rebellion forces she fought alongside were struggling to hold the line. Kitana, her closest friend and the rightful heir to the throne of Edenia, was locked in combat with Baraka, his savage Tarkatan blades slicing through the air with deadly precision. Jade could feel the tension in her muscles, the weight of battle still pulling at her limbs, urging her to leap back into the fray. But for now, she hesitated. For the first time in a long while, she found herself grappling with something far more difficult than any physical fight—a war within herself.

The question had been gnawing at her for weeks, like a thorn embedded deep within her mind, refusing to be ignored.

What is the true nature of good and evil?

It was a question that had plagued her since the fall of Edenia, since the first time she had taken a life in the name of a cause she believed to be just. Jade had always been a warrior, trained in the arts of combat and stealth since she could remember. Loyalty was her creed, and duty was her guide. She had fought countless battles alongside Kitana, spilling blood in the name of freeing their realm from tyranny.

But now, as she stood among the dead, her hands stained with the blood of those she had slain, doubt crept into her heart.

Is this what justice looks like? Is this the cost of righteousness?

The faces of the fallen haunted her—men, women, even creatures who had once been alive, driven by their own desires, their own fears. Many of them were just soldiers, pawns in a war far greater than themselves. Some of them had families, hopes, dreams. And yet, in the heat of battle, Jade had cut them down without hesitation.

For the greater good, she told herself. But the words rang hollow now, like an empty promise.

Jade’s fingers tightened around the bo staff, her knuckles white. She had fought for Kitana, for Edenia, for the freedom of her people. But as the years of conflict wore on, she found herself questioning the line between hero and villain. In war, the lines blurred. Acts of violence, no matter how justified, left scars—not just on the body but on the soul.

A sudden movement caught her attention, and Jade turned just in time to see a figure emerging from the shadows, moving swiftly toward her. It was one of Shao Kahn's warriors, his face twisted into a snarl, a jagged sword raised high above his head. He charged at her with a roar, his eyes wild with fury.

Instinct took over.

Jade spun, her bo staff slicing through the air in a graceful arc. With precision honed through years of training, she disarmed the attacker, her staff cracking against his wrist with a sickening snap. The sword clattered to the ground, and before the warrior could react, Jade delivered a swift kick to his chest, sending him sprawling into the dirt. He groaned in pain, clutching his broken arm, but still, he struggled to rise.

Jade stood over him, her heart pounding. The tip of her staff hovered inches from his throat, her body tensed, ready to strike the killing blow.

But something stopped her.

For a moment, time seemed to slow. She looked into the man's eyes and saw something unexpected—a flicker of fear, of desperation. He wasn’t a mindless brute, not just another nameless enemy. He was a man, caught in the same storm of violence that had consumed so many lives. In that instant, Jade saw not a foe but a reflection of herself—a warrior driven by loyalty, fighting for a cause that demanded blood.

Her grip on the staff loosened.
