Scream: Mistress of Mayhem by Jade Gretz

Dr. Patricia Robertson adjusted her headlamp, peering into the inky depths of the Mayan temple chamber. The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and a faint, unsettling sweetness. Dust motes danced in the beam of her light, catching the glint of countless golden ornaments adorning the walls.

Pat and her team, a seasoned group of archaeologists, had stumbled upon an untouched chamber deep within the heart of the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza. The discovery was unprecedented – a chamber untouched by looters or the ravages of time.

In the center of the chamber stood a single, imposing obsidian sarcophagus, its surface etched with intricate glyphs that pulsed with an eerie internal light. A palpable sense of unease prickled at Pat's skin, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

"This... this is incredible," Dr. Reyes, the team's anthropologist, breathed beside her. His voice echoed slightly in the cavernous chamber, amplifying the unsettling stillness.

Ignoring the unease, Pat knelt before the sarcophagus. The glyphs seemed to writhe and shift under her gaze, mesmerizing and strangely hypnotic. Curiosity, a potent force in any archaeologist, overpowered her caution.

"Let's see what secrets this tomb holds," she murmured, reaching out to trace a fingertip along the cool, smooth surface.

A jolt of energy surged through her arm, hot and searing. She gasped, retracting her hand as if burned. A section of the sarcophagus surface shimmered, then fractured, splitting open with a sound like a tortured scream.

Pat stumbled back, fear blooming in her chest. From within the sarcophagus, a swirling mass of inky blackness erupted. It pulsed with a sickly, bioluminescent light, tendrils lashing out like hungry serpents.

"What in the…" Reyes sputtered, backing away. The other team members, two technicians and a local guide, huddled together, their faces pale with terror.

The black mass writhed, taking shape before their horrified gazes. It coalesced into a grotesque parody of a human figure, elongated and contorted, its surface rippling with an unsettling fluidity. A maw filled with needle-like teeth split open on its featureless face, letting out a shriek that seemed to shred the very fabric of the room.

Panic erupted. The technicians, armed only with basic tools, were no match for the creature. It lashed out with its tendrils, impaling one technician through the chest with a sickening squelch. The other technician fled, screaming, only to be tackled to the ground by a swirling black tendril that sank into his flesh with a wet gurgle.

Pat and Reyes watched in frozen horror as their team was brutally dispatched in seconds. The creature, its form solidifying, seemed to revel in the carnage. It turned its malevolent gaze towards Pat, its black form oozing with an unsettling hunger.

"Symbiotic organism," Reyes managed to stammer, his voice barely a whisper. "It must be… a symbiote."

The creature, sensing their fear and vulnerability, let out another ear-splitting scream. It lunged at them, its tendrils whipping through the air.

Pat, adrenaline pushing past her fear, ripped her backpack from her shoulder, grabbing a flare gun she kept for emergencies. With a desperate prayer, she aimed and fired the flare at the creature.

The flare exploded in a burst of white-hot light, momentarily blinding them all. When Pat squinted back open her eyes, the chamber was engulfed in an eerie silence. The symbiote was gone.

Relief flooded Pat's system, momentarily washing away the horror she had just witnessed. But as she rushed towards Reyes, she noticed a faint shimmering around his arm. It pulsed with a sickly green light.

"Reyes!" she screamed, dread blooming in her chest. She grabbed his arm, fear solidifying as she saw tendrils of black oozing from beneath his sleeve.

"Pat," Reyes choked out, his voice distorted with a primal hunger. "We're both… going to be… one."

His eyes, once filled with fear, now glowed with an unnatural green light. The symbiote had found a new host, and this time, it was her friend, her colleague.

Pat didn't have time for despair. The symbiote, fueled by Reyes's memories and knowledge, was now stronger. She had to escape. This was a fight she couldn't win.

Grabbing her radio, she sent a frantic distress call, hoping against hope that someone, anyone, might receive it. With a final look at the transformed Reyes, Pat turned and fled
