Power Girl: Shield of the City by Jade Gretz

Power Girl, Karen Starr of Earth-2, stood triumphant in the crimson twilight of Apokolips. Darkseid, the tyrannical god-king, lay defeated at her feet, his Omega Beams silenced. But victory came at a terrible cost. A shimmering blade, wielded by Desaad, Darkseid's closest advisor, had plunged into her chest, a parting shot fueled by spite.

The pain came later, a dull ache that blossomed into a searing agony as Power Girl ripped the blade from her wound. But it wasn't just physical pain. A chilling emptiness bloomed within her, a void where her essence, her very soul, used to reside.

Lightheaded, disoriented, Power Girl collapsed onto the desolate Apokoliptian landscape. She tried to summon her signature strength, to envelop herself in the crimson flames that were her birthright, but nothing. No heat, no crackle of energy responded. All that remained was a horrifying hollowness.

Panic clawed at her throat. This was worse than any physical injury. This was a death of the spirit, a shattering of the essence that made her Power Girl.

Suddenly, the world around her dissolved. No longer standing on Apokolips, she found herself in a swirling vortex of colors, a kaleidoscope of memories and emotions. Faces, both familiar and unknown, flickered past – Superman, Supergirl, Huntress, the Justice Society. Voices echoed – laughter, love, anger, battles fought and won.

Then, the kaleidoscope fragmented further. The faces contorted, the voices turned into screams. The once-vivid memories morphed into twisted parodies, mocking glimpses of a life that was falling apart.

A voice, raspy and cold, echoed through the void. "Welcome, Karen Starr, to the shattered remnants of yourself."

Power Girl spun around, but there was nothing there, only the swirling chaos.

"Who are you?" she cried, fear a raw edge to her voice.

"I am the consequence," the voice replied. "The price you pay for defying fate."

A horrifying realization dawned on Power Girl. This wasn't just a physical injury; it was a metaphysical one. Desaad's blade had somehow fractured her very soul, separating it from the memories, the emotions, the essence that made her who she was.

The fragmented kaleidoscope began to solidify, taking shape around her. A grotesque cityscape materialized, cobbled together from twisted versions of Metropolis, Gotham, and Korugar. Monstrous figures, parodies of the heroes and villains Power Girl knew, patrolled the twisted streets.

Suddenly, a horrifying figure emerged from the shadows. It was Power Girl, but a grotesque caricature – her muscles grotesquely bulging, her eyes burning with an unnatural crimson fire. A twisted version of her power aura crackled around her.

"Sister?" the dark Power Girl rasped, her voice a distorted echo of Karen's own. "You shouldn't be here. This is my domain now."

Fear turned into a cold fury. That wasn't her, not truly. That was a fragment, a shard of her broken soul twisted into a mockery of who she once was.

Power Girl knew what she had to do. She had to find the core of her essence, the piece of her soul still holding onto her true self. It was the only way to reassemble herself, to become whole again.

The twisted city, a reflection of her fractured psyche, became her battleground. She fought her way through warped versions of her friends, each victory hollow as it brought her closer to the source of the darkness.

Each battle chipped away at her resolve. Doubts gnawed at her. Was this a test? Was the dark Power Girl right? Was this her true face, her darker desires given form?

Finally, she reached the heart of the fractured city – a towering, pulsating black monolith. Desaad, garbed in Apokoliptian robes, stood before it, a cruel smile twisting his features.

"You've come far, Karen Starr," he cackled. "But you cannot reclaim what is lost. This is your true nature, your hidden darkness!"

With a wave of his hand, the monolith pulsed with dark energy, unleashing a torrent of twisted memories – Karen's moments of doubt, her anger, her hidden fears. Each memory took shape, becoming monstrous entities that lunged at her.

Tears streamed down Power Girl's face. These weren't just memories; they were parts of her, the dark aspects she had always suppressed. But they weren't her. They were fragments, pieces of a puzzle waiting to be put together.

With a desperate cry, Power Girl reached out, embracing the darkness. She didn't deny it, she didn't
