In the depths beneath the surface of Gotham River, where murky waters held secrets older than the city itself, a presence awakened. An ancient evil, long thought to be contained, began to stir, twisting and rolling like a current restless beneath the waves. From the depths of the inky waters, whispers, and murmurs rose, carrying a melody that danced through the ripples—a chilling lullaby that called out to the darkness. Shadows flickered in the corners of this world, and a fearsome darkness clawed its way toward the surface, threatening to break free and drown Gotham in its pallid embrace.
Batgirl stood on the city’s edge, a silhouette against the dying light, the sun dipping low on the horizon, spilling vibrant oranges and reds across the sky before yielding to the night. She could feel it beneath her, that subtle shift in the air, a whisper on the wind warning her of the growing turmoil beneath the surface. The chestnut brown of her hair whipped around her as she turned her gaze to the choppy waters, their unpredictable nature reflecting the chaos emerging from the depths.
An urgent call had pierced through the depths of the night, coming through the static of her communicator. Commissioner Gordon's voice was low and tense, laced with a hint of panic. “Something’s happening by the river, Babs. Reports of people going missing. Strange shadows flickering on the water’s surface. I need you down there… now!”
With a determined nod, she flipped her hood up, armor glistening under the evening glow, and launched off the rooftop. Her grapnel gun bit into the ledge of a nearby building, and she swung over the lanes, a streak of purpose through the labyrinth of Gotham’s skyline. The glow of neon lights and the cries of the city below faded into a muted backdrop as she landed nimbly on the edge of the rocky pier by the river.
A chill danced up her spine. It wasn’t just the icy breeze sweeping across the water; it was something darker pulling at her senses, tugging at the seams of rational thought. Rushing footsteps echoed behind her; it was Oracle, the digital mastermind and her closest ally. “Babs,” she called, urgency in her voice, “I’ve been tracking anomalies right over Gotham River. Deep sonar readings suggest something is moving—a deep-sea creature?”
“More like a deep-sea horror,” Batgirl interjected. “Reports of disappearances increase every hour. We need to get to the bottom of this… literally.”
They paced along the edge of the dock, where the gentle lapping of the waves morphed into frantic sloshes against the weathered wood. Only shadows answered back, dark shapes moving with an unsettling intelligence. Batgirl could see them gliding through the currents—a dark slit beneath the water, unseen eyes watching, waiting.
“Babs, I can’t find any intel on whatever is down there. It’s like it’s completely erased from all records,” Oracle said, her tone steeped in dread. “You’ll have to go in. I’ll guide you from here.”
Taking a deep breath, Batgirl secured her utility belt and dived into the cold, murky water without a second thought, the world above fading as she plummeted into the dark abyss. Water enveloped her, chilling, wrapping around her like a suffocating shroud. She steadied her breathing, adrenaline surging through her veins as her eyes adjusted to the depths. The sight was unsettling—a graveyard of boats lay wrecked on the riverbed, remnants of lost lives pulled into the depths, the air was thick with unspeakable despair as ancient creatures whispered forgotten secrets.
Batgirl moved swiftly, scanning the hidden shadows, her senses heightened. Shapes flitted just beyond her vision, and every instinct told her to turn back. But the weight of her duty bore down, unyielding. A series of vibrations pulsed through the water, accompanied by a low, sonorous growl. They pierced through the silence—a chorus of souls, long lost, calling out from their watery prison.
Turning sharply, she caught sight of an enormous silhouette zigzagging beneath the shadowy surface. It was enormous, scaled, remnants of armor glistening in the dark. A twisted amalgamation of whimsy and horror that seemed to derive from folklore—an echo of the legends steeped in Gotham’s past, long forgotten but never extinguished.
The moment hung in the balance before an eruption of bubbles burst forth, and multiple figures emerged from the darkness. They weren’t merely creatures of the deep; they were something sentient, malformed, and cruel. Grinning mouths elong
