Teela: Warrior Queen ANIMATION
The Ember Kiss
She came to the obsidian amphitheater not to save the world, but because the world had grown too quiet. Teela, whose hair was the color of harvested wheat and whose eyes held the cold arithmetic of a thousand battlefields, had ceased to feel the thrill of the blade. The Sorceress had whispered of a new terror in the chasm below Castle Grayskull—a warrior unmade of flesh, born of the planet’s molten temper. “He is called the Cinder-Knight,” the Sorceress had said, her voice a rustle of dying leaves. “He does not wish to conquer. He wishes to dance.”
Teela had laughed at that. Now, standing at the rim of the fire pit, she understood. The knight rose from the lava flow like a terrible orchid blooming. His body was a lattice of orange and white heat, his face a smooth, featureless dome of shimmering agony. Where his eyes should have been, two pinpricks of blinding blue radiance stared back—curious, amused, and hungry.
“You are the one who smells of rain,” the Cinder-Knight said. His voice was not a voice. It was the crackle of a hearth, the snap of a timber, the whisper of ash rising from a cremation. “I have felt you crossing the stone for an hour. Each footstep cooled the rock behind you. Unusual.”
Teela drew her longsword, the blade singing against the leather of her scabbard. “I’m here to send you back to the mantle, coal-heart. No speeches. No riddles.”
He tilted his head, and a cascade of embers fell from his shoulders like a cape of dying stars. “But riddles are the only truth, warrior-maid. You carry a shield that has never been kissed. A sword that has drawn blood but never tears. You are a virgin of the heart, aren’t you? Untouched by the one fire that matters.”
“I’ve touched the fires of Eternia’s forges,” she said, circling left. The heat was already curling the edges of her leather tunic. “I’ve bathed in the breath of dragons. You’re just a candle with delusions of grandeur.”
He lunged.
Not with a weapon—his hands were the weapons. Fingers of white-hot plasma reached for her throat. Teela rolled beneath the swipe, felt her ponytail singe and curl. She came up slashing, and her steel bit into his ribcage—or where a ribcage would be. The sword passed through him like a spoon through honey. He laughed, a sound like a thousand matches striking at once.
“Steel is a memory of earth,” he said, turning slowly. “I am earth’s fever. You cannot cut a fever, Teela of the Royal Guard. You can only sweat it out, or succumb.”
She retreated two steps, her mind racing. The Sorceress had warned her: no physical weapon could harm him. But the Sorceress had also smiled when she said it, a thin, unpleasant smile. There was a secret here, a mystery wrapped in flame.
“Why are you here?” Teela demanded, buying time. “The usual demon rhetoric? You want to burn the world? Enslave the innocent?”
The Cinder-Knight paused. His blue eyes flickered, dimmed, then blazed brighter. “I am here because I was lonely. The core of this world is a vast, silent marriage of pressure and heat. I am the only voice down there. And I heard a name repeated in the prayers of dying soldiers, in the whispers of anxious kings, in the wet dreams of young knights. Teela. Teela. Teela. I thought, that one must be warm. That one must burn from within, like me.”
He took a step closer. The obsidian floor began to glow red beneath his feet.
“I do not want your world,” he continued. “I want a single night of your attention. A duel not to the death, but to the surrender. When you yield, you will not die. You will simply… understand. You will feel what I feel. The ecstasy of pure incandescence.”
Teela’s stomach clenched. This was not a conqueror. This was a suitor made of catastrophe. Seduction had never been her battlefield. She had parried axes and dodged laser blasts, but never a whispered promise of annihilation wrapped in the shape of a man.
“You’re insane,” she said softly.
“No,” he replied, and for a moment, his voice softened into something almost gentle—the crackle of a winter hearth. “I am lonely. And you are the only creature on this planet who looked into a volcano once and did not flinch. I saw you, Teela. Ten years ago. You were a girl, and you stood on the lip of the Chasm of Kor, and you stared into the lava. Others screamed. You whispered, ‘Beautiful.’”
Her blood chilled. She had done that. She had forgotten until this moment. The girl who had whispe
