The air hung heavy with the stench of decay and damp earth as Supergirl touched down on the gnarled roots guarding the entrance to the Blackwood. Its towering trees, their branches clawing at the bruised twilight sky, formed a dense canopy impenetrable to sunlight. This wasn't the Metropolis she patrolled, bathed in the neon glow of progress. This was a place where nature had claimed dominion, a primeval wilderness pulsating with a malevolent energy.
Kara Zor-El, better known to the world as Supergirl, adjusted her visor, its internal lights slicing through the pervasive gloom. Whispers of an ancient curse plaguing a nearby village had reached the DEO (Department of Extra-Ordinary Operations), sending her on this solo mission. Villagers spoke of vanishing livestock, unearthly screams piercing the night, and a chilling mist that choked the Blackwood, slowly encroaching on their homes.
A pang of unease prickled at Kara despite her Kryptonian strength and impervious skin. This wasn't a physical threat, but something older, something that gnawed at the fabric of reality itself. The hairs on her arms stood on end, the silence broken only by the rustle of unseen creatures and the unsettling creak of ancient branches.
As she ventured deeper, the trees seemed to close in, their gnarled limbs resembling bony fingers reaching for her. The air grew colder, stealing the warmth from her suit. The whispers, once faint, now swirled around her, unintelligible yet laced with a chilling malice.
Suddenly, the path before her vanished. Where there was once solid ground, now lay a shimmering portal – a swirling vortex of obsidian and emerald light. Curiosity, a trait that often landed her in trouble, wrestled with the gnawing fear in her gut. This wasn't Kryptonian technology, but something far older, a doorway to somewhere… unnatural.
Pushing past her apprehension, Kara flew towards the portal. The moment she breached the swirling energy, the world around her dissolved. Gone were the towering trees and the oppressive darkness; replaced by a desolate, blood-red landscape. A crimson moon, bloated and malevolent, hung low in the sky, casting grotesque shadows.
In the distance, a twisted castle, its black stone walls pulsating with an unnatural luminescence, dominated the desolate landscape. The air crackled with a malevolent energy, and the whispers reached a fever pitch, forming coherent words in an archaic tongue she didn't understand.
Suddenly, a chilling shriek tore through the air. A hulking figure emerged from the castle, its form shifting and melding like smoke. It was vaguely humanoid, but twisted beyond recognition, with obsidian claws and eyes burning like embers. It emanated a putrid stench, a cocktail of decay and rotten magic.
A primal instinct to fight surged through Kara. Years of training, of battling alien threats, kicked in. But this creature wasn't like anything she had ever faced. As she charged towards it, her super-speed blurring her form, the ground beneath her feet turned to a churning mass of black ooze, threatening to engulf her.
With a burst of strength, she blasted through the ooze, slamming into the creature. However, her Kryptonian fists, usually capable of shattering mountains, barely dented its insubstantial form. The creature retaliated with a swipe of its razor-sharp claws, tearing a gash through her suit. Pain, a foreign sensation, ripped through her, but it fueled her anger.
Their fight was a desperate dance of light and shadow. Supergirl, her powers diminished by this unnatural plane, fought with the ferocity of a cornered animal. The creature, fueled by the dark magic of the realm, seemed relentless.
Desperate, Kara unleashed her heat vision, a blazing beam cutting through the blood-red sky. But to her horror, the creature absorbed the heat, growing stronger, its form solidifying. The whispers reached a crescendo, forming a single terrifying word – "Succumb."
Weakened, disoriented, and overwhelmed, Kara stumbled back. This fight, unlike any she had faced before, seemed to drain not just her physical strength but her very will. The malevolent energy of the Blackwood was turning her hope into fear, her courage into despair.
As the creature lunged for her, a glimmer of golden light flickered at the periphery of her vision. A woman, shrouded in a cloak woven from starlight, emerged from the twisted woods bordering the crimson landscape. Her eyes, the color of a summer sky, held an unwavering streng
