Black Cat: Dance of Deception by Jade Gretz

Moonlight streamed through the dusty skylight of Felicia Hardy's makeshift New York hideout, casting long, skeletal shadows across the room. Black Cat, ever the pragmatic cat burglar, ignored the theatrical flair, her emerald eyes narrowed at the holographic projection shimmering before her. The object of her desire: the Eye of Bast.

Legends whispered of the artifact – a sapphire amulet imbued with the power of Bast, the ancient Egyptian cat goddess. It promised unimaginable luck and agility, a power-up Black Cat couldn't ignore. The current owner, a reclusive billionaire named Alistair Thorne, was notorious for his obsessive collection of cursed artifacts. Stealing from him wouldn't be easy, but then again, where was the fun in easy?

Black Cat spent the next few days meticulously planning the heist. Thorne had a state-of-the-art security system, a private army of guards, and a laser security grid that could turn an intruder into diced ham. The key, Black Cat deduced, lay in the mansion's ventilation system. A network of narrow shafts that even the most advanced cameras couldn't penetrate.

The night of the heist arrived, a stormy affair that painted the city in sheets of rain. Clad in her sleek black suit, enhanced with night vision goggles and grappling hooks, Black Cat scaled the sheer face of Thorne's gothic mansion like a spider. Locating the air vent proved easy, entering it slightly less so. Confined spaces weren't her forte, and the stale air tasted stale and dusty.

The journey felt like an eternity. Just as claustrophobia started to gnaw at her, Black Cat spotted a faint light ahead - the entrance to a hidden chamber within the mansion. With a practiced shimmy, she squeezed through the opening and landed in a cavernous room.

The sight that greeted her was enough to make her breath hitch. Gilded coffins lined the walls, their occupants desiccated Egyptians adorned with golden funerary masks. The air hung heavy with the scent of decay and forbidden magic. In the center of the room, on a pedestal of black obsidian, sat the Eye of Bast.

It pulsed with a faint blue light, radiating an undeniable power. Black Cat's heart thumped a primal rhythm against her ribs. This was it. The real deal. But something about the chamber felt…off. As she inched closer, the air grew colder, and the room seemed to hum with an unsettling energy.

Suddenly, a grating voice echoed through the tomb. "So, a petty thief comes to claim my prize."

Black Cat whirled around, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the shadows lurked Alistair Thorne, a frail figure draped in an ornate robe, his eyes glowing a sickly green. The man looked like he belonged more in a sarcophagus than orchestrating a heist.

"Thorne," Black Cat said, her voice surprisingly steady. "Didn't expect you to be the greeter."

Thorne cackled, a sound like dry leaves rustling in a crypt. "The Eye chooses its champion, Miss Hardy. And apparently, it finds you…wanting."

He raised his hand, the green glow in his eyes intensifying. Black Cat felt a surge of vertigo, the chamber spinning around her. She stumbled backwards, instinctively reaching for her gravity belt. But it wasn't working. The artificial gravity had malfunctioned under the influence of the Eye.

Thorne grinned, revealing a mouthful of decaying teeth. "The Eye seeks devotion, not opportunism. You will witness its true power."

The ground swayed beneath Black Cat's feet, the room warping as if seen through a funhouse mirror. The air crackled with raw energy, and the desiccated figures in the coffins began to stir. Their dusty wrappings fell away, revealing mummified forms twitching with a grotesque semblance of life.

Black Cat felt an icy hand clamp down on her shoulder. Before she could react, a mummy's yellowed teeth gnashed against her exposed arm. A shriek tore from her throat as she recoiled, the pain lancing up her arm.

Terror surged through Black Cat. This wasn't about stolen valuables anymore. This was about survival. Adrenaline shot through her veins, sharpening her senses. Her eyes settled on a fallen ceremonial dagger lying at the foot of the pedestal.

With a burst of desperation, Black Cat lunged toward the dagger, her movement a blur in the chaotic room. Just as she reached for it, a bony hand reached out, clawing at her face. Black Cat dodged, whipping around and using the mummy's momentum to fling it back into a sarcophagus.

Snatching the dagger, Black Cat spun t
