The Gossamer Schism

Anastasia Cisarovna did not believe in ghosts, but as she stepped through the pressurized airlock of the Research Station Volos, she found herself surrounded by their modern equivalent: the lingering echoes of men who were technically alive, yet fundamentally absent. The air inside the subterranean complex smelled of scorched ozone and something sickly sweet, like overripe peaches rotting in a humidifier. Her thigh-high boots, polished to a mirror sheen that reflected the flickering emergency lights, clicked against the grated floor with a sound like a metronome counting down to an execution. She adjusted the bridge of her glasses, the crimson tint of her lenses bathing the carnage ahead in a monochromatic wash of blood and shadow.

Ahead of her, a Viper stood motionless in the center of the corridor. He was not on guard; he was suspended in a state of grotesque equilibrium. Fine, translucent filaments, thinner than a spider’s silk but pulsing with a faint, bioluminescent violet hue, extended from the ventilation ducts above, threading directly into the seams of his tactical helmet and the exposed skin of his neck. His rifle hung limply from a single finger, swinging with a rhythmic, hypnotic sway. As Anastasia approached, the soldier’s head tilted at an angle that suggested the vertebrae had been turned to jelly.

"I expected a warmer welcome, Mindbender," Anastasia whispered, her voice a cool blade of velvet cutting through the heavy atmosphere. She drew her pulse-pistol, the weapon an extension of her own calculated grace. "Though I suppose silence is a marked improvement over your usual megalomaniacal droning."

The Viper didn’t fire. Instead, his jaw dropped open, and a sound emerged that was not human—a chord of three discordant notes vibrating simultaneously. The filaments tightened, hoisting the soldier a few inches off the floor. He began to dance. It was a jittery, disjointed waltz, his limbs snapping into positions that defied the limits of ligament and bone. It was the movement of a puppet controlled by a drunkard, yet there was a terrifying intent behind it. The "Living Virus," as the panicked distress signal had called it, was not merely consuming its hosts; it was choreographing them.

"Beautiful, is it not, Baroness?" The voice didn't come from the soldier’s mouth, but from the speakers embedded in the walls, distorted by the same tri-tonal resonance. It was Mindbender’s voice, or at least the digital ghost of it, being filtered through the viral intelligence. "The Mnemosyne Strain does not destroy the mind. It simply... reassigns the priority of the soul. Why suffer the burden of free will when one can be part of a perfect, singular masterpiece?"

"I have always found 'masterpieces' to be the refuge of those who cannot handle the messiness of reality," Anastasia replied, her eyes scanning the ceiling for the source of the filaments. She fired a single shot, the bolt of energy searing through the violet threads. The Viper collapsed like a heap of laundry, his body twitching as the virus within him frantically tried to reconnect. "And you, Doctor, were always more of a finger-painter. Where is the kill-switch? My patience is a finite resource, and I have a dinner engagement in Zurich that I do not intend to miss."

"The kill-switch is a myth of the unevolved," the voice hissed. "You are not here to stop it, Anastasia. You are the final piece of the mosaic. The Strain requires a commander. A central cortex with the tactical brilliance to coordinate the harvest. The soldiers are but limbs. They lack... your flair."

A door at the end of the hall groaned as it was forced open from the inside. A dozen more puppets spilled out—Neo-Vipers, their armor cracked, their flesh interlaced with the violet webbing. They moved with a terrifying, synchronized fluidity, a wave of meat and silk. Anastasia didn't retreat. She found a strange, dark allure in the sight. This was terror in its purest form, a biological coup d'état. She felt a thrill of genuine fear, a cold needle of ice sliding down her spine, and she leaned into it. Fear, after all, was the only thing that made one feel truly alive in the service of Cobra.

She retreated toward the primary laboratory, her movements a blur of black leather and calculated violence. She fired as she moved, each shot a precise strike against the clusters of filaments hanging from the ceiling. She realized quickly that the soldiers were secondary; the virus was a nervous system without a spine, using the facility’s archit
