Starborne Avenger: Samus's Majesty by Jade Gretz

The relentless solar wind pummeled the Varia Suit, turning Samus Aran's vision into a swirling kaleidoscope of green and gold. Asteroids, jagged teeth in the maw of space, whizzed past just inches from the hull of her modified Gunship. The alarms, a cacophony of klaxons and flashing lights, bled into a constant background hum, a relentless assault on her already frayed nerves.

It had been weeks since the distress signal had pierced the desolate silence of this uncharted sector. Weeks of relentless pursuit, of chasing a phantom through the treacherous asteroid belt known as the Scarred Expanse. Now, on the verge of giving up, the signal spiked, resonating with a chilling intensity that pulled at Samus’s instincts like a scream in the void.

Through sheer willpower and piloting skills honed over countless battles, Samus threaded the Gunship through the asteroid maze. The Varia Suit strained against the G-forces, her internal comms crackling with warnings about imminent hull breaches. Yet, Samus pressed on, her focus a laser beam cutting through the chaos.

The source of the signal materialized from the darkness – a derelict space station, a jagged black silhouette against the shimmering nebula swirling beyond. It hung like a broken spiderweb, riddled with gaping holes and scorched by an unseen fire.

A shiver ran down Samus’s spine. This wasn’t a distress beacon – it was a trap. But with nowhere else to turn, she initiated a landing sequence. The docking procedure was fraught with peril as the station’s artificial gravity flickered erratically, throwing the Gunship off balance. Finally, with a shudder that rattled the Varia Suit, she landed in a hangar choked with debris and the stench of burnt metal.

The station was eerily silent. The air, thick with dust and an unsettling stillness, felt heavy on her lungs. Cautiously, Samus navigated the derelict corridors, her Power Beam casting an unnerving circle of light in the perpetual gloom. The station hummed with an unnatural energy, a low thrumming that vibrated through her bones.

Then, a whisper.

It was faint at first, a mere rustle in the air vents. But Samus knew that sound. It was the signature hum of Metroids, the parasitic creatures she had battled across the galaxy for years. But these whispers were different – filled with a chilling dissonance, a malevolent glee that sent chills down her spine.

As she rounded a corner, she came face to face with her nightmare. Colossal cocoons pulsed with an unnatural luminescence, tethered to the station’s skeletal frame. Inside them, monstrous figures shifted, their forms distorted by a malevolent energy. These weren’t the Metroids she knew – these were twisted parodies, their forms grotesquely mutated, their hunger amplified to a terrifying degree.

A screech tore through the silence, ripping at Samus’s eardrums. From the shadows, a horde of mutated Metroids surged forward, their glowing red eyes burning with an insatiable madness. The fight was visceral, a desperate ballet of dodging swipes and blasts of corrosive energy. Each Metroid she dispatched seemed to spawn another, their grotesque forms multiplying endlessly.

The air grew thick with the stench of burnt flesh and melted circuits. Samus, her breaths coming in ragged gasps, felt exhaustion gnawing at her. This wasn’t a battle – it was a descent into a horrifying abyss.

Then, from the depths of the station, a new horror revealed itself. A creature unlike anything Samus had ever encountered oozed forward, a pulsating mass of flesh and metal fused into a grotesque mockery of life. It pulsed with the same malevolent energy that corrupted the Metroids, its single glowing eye fixing on Samus with a chilling intelligence.

This was the source of the darkness, the orchestrator of this horrifying mutation. Samus unleashed everything her arsenal could muster on the creature, but the energy blasts seemed to pass through it harmlessly. The creature laughed, a sound like grinding gears, and tendrils of corrupted metal lashed out, coiling around her Power Beam, rendering it useless.

Panic threatened to consume her. This wasn’t just a battle against physical adversaries; it was a fight against a malevolent force warping the fabric of reality itself. Despair, a cold and insidious serpent, coiled around her heart.

Just as the corrupted tendrils were about to constrict her chest, a faint pulse resonated through the room. It wasn't the thrumming darkness, but a faint echo of ligh
