Kitana: Edenian Royalty ANIMATION
The Frozen Throne
The ruins had been dead for three centuries, yet they breathed.
Princess Kitana felt it the moment she crossed the threshold of what had once been the Temple of Eternal Winter—a subtle exhalation of malice that made her steel fans quiver in their sheaths. The stones beneath her feet, glazed with perpetual ice, seemed to pulse with an ancient heartbeat. Above her, fractured spires reached toward a sky the color of old bone, their surfaces carved with symbols that hurt to look at directly.
She had come here following whispers of a conspiracy, rumors that someone was attempting to resurrect the temple's dark purpose. What she had not expected was to find him here.
Sub-Zero emerged from the shadows between two collapsed pillars like winter personified. His blue garments seemed to absorb the pale light filtering through the ruined dome above, and his eyes held the cold indifference of the grave. But there was something else—something wrong in the way he moved, as if his body were responding to commands from a will not entirely his own.
"You should not have come here, Princess," he said, his voice carrying the sound of ice cracking under pressure. "This place has been claimed."
Kitana's fans slid into her hands with practiced ease, their razor edges catching what little light there was. "Claimed by whom? You serve no master, Kuai Liang."
A smile touched his lips, but it was not the expression she remembered from their past encounters. This smile belonged to something that had learned to wear a human face. "I serve the true purpose of this place now. As will you."
The temperature plummeted. Kitana's breath became visible in sharp puffs as frost began to form on the ancient stones around them. But this was not the clean cold of Sub-Zero's usual ice magic—this carried the weight of centuries, the accumulated chill of countless screaming souls.
"The temple was built as a prison," Kitana said, circling him slowly, her fans held ready. "The Lin Kuei archives spoke of it. A place to contain something that should never be released."
"A place of power," Sub-Zero corrected, raising his hands as ice began to coalesce around his fingers. "The ancient ones understood what we have forgotten—that true strength comes from embracing the darkness between the stars."
The ice constructs that formed were unlike anything Kitana had ever seen him create. Instead of his usual precise, angular formations, these shapes writhed with organic malevolence. Frozen tentacles burst from the ground around her feet, their surfaces covered in what looked disturbingly like eyes. A wall of ice erupted between her and the exit, but this barrier seemed to breathe, expanding and contracting as if it possessed lungs.
Kitana leaped backward, her fans spinning in deadly arcs. The razor edges met the grasping ice tentacles, and where steel touched the frozen appendages, they shrieked—not with the sound of ice breaking, but with voices that might once have been human.
"What have you done to yourself?" she demanded, landing gracefully atop a fallen column.
Sub-Zero's laugh was the sound of winter wind through empty tombs. "I have accepted the gift that this place offers. The thing that sleeps beneath these stones has been dreaming for so long, Princess. Its dreams have power."
More constructs rose around her—this time taking the shape of warriors made entirely of ice, but their features were wrong, distorted, as if carved by someone who had only heard humans described but never seen one. They moved with jerky, unnatural motions, and from their mouths came a sound like breaking glass mixed with weeping.
Kitana's fans became a whirlwind of steel, her movements flowing from one form to the next with lethal precision. The Edenian combat techniques her mother had taught her served her well here—each strike calculated not just for maximum damage, but for perfect balance and positioning. She carved through the ice warriors methodically, but for every construct she destroyed, two more took its place.
"You cannot fight forever," Sub-Zero said, his form beginning to blur as he merged partially with the ice around him. "The cold is patient. The hunger is eternal."
"Then it will have to remain hungry," Kitana replied, launching herself forward in a spinning attack that shattered three constructs at once.
But as her fans cut through the animated ice, she began to no
