The dense, sweltering jungle hummed with life, but it was a far cry from the natural ecosystem that once existed in this part of the world. Hannah Dundee crouched low, hidden in the thick underbrush, her sharp eyes tracking movement in the distance. The scent of decay hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the jungle’s new inhabitants. The mutated dinosaurs, once nothing more than relics of a prehistoric past, had resurfaced—but not in their original form. Twisted by the same strange energy that had fused man, machine, and beast in this lawless era, these creatures were faster, stronger, and deadlier than anything she had ever encountered before.
Ahead, through the curtain of vines, Hannah caught a glimpse of her target: a hulking, grotesque silhouette moving between the trees. Its mottled skin, a patchwork of green and sickly gray, pulsed unnaturally, as though it were struggling to contain the massive muscles beneath. Jagged spines ran down its back, glowing faintly with a bioluminescent green light, casting eerie shadows onto the jungle floor. This was no ordinary dinosaur—it was something far worse, something born from the chaos of genetic mutations that had plagued the world since the fall.
She tightened her grip on the pulse rifle slung across her back, the weapon feeling cold and heavy in her hands. This thing had to be stopped before it reached the settlements. The reports had been trickling in for weeks now—whole villages wiped out, livestock devoured, people vanishing in the night, only for their remains to be found days later, strewn across the jungle like offerings to some malevolent god. The settlers were scared, and rightfully so. These beasts didn’t just kill; they hunted with terrifying intelligence.
Hannah’s breath was steady as she waited for the creature to come closer. She knew she couldn’t take it head-on—not without backup. But if she could slow it down, lead it away from the nearest settlement, she might have a chance to buy time until help arrived.
A guttural snarl echoed through the trees, low and menacing. The creature’s glowing eyes snapped toward her direction, as if it had sensed her presence. Hannah felt her heart pound in her chest, but she remained still, hoping the shadows would conceal her for just a little longer.
Then, with shocking speed for a beast of its size, the creature moved—barreling toward her position, crashing through the underbrush with the force of a locomotive. Hannah cursed under her breath and bolted from her hiding spot, sprinting through the jungle as the ground trembled beneath her feet. Branches snapped, and leaves flew into the air as the mutant dinosaur closed in, its footfalls heavy and relentless.
She darted between the trees, heart racing, as she fired a shot behind her. The pulse rifle let out a high-pitched whine as it discharged a beam of energy, striking the creature’s side. A flash of blue light illuminated the jungle, followed by a screech that made her ears ring. But when she glanced over her shoulder, the creature was still coming, seemingly unfazed by the hit.
"Great," she muttered to herself. "That just made it angrier."
Hannah ducked under a low-hanging vine and slid down a muddy embankment, her boots skidding against the wet earth. She could hear the creature roaring behind her, its growls shaking the trees. The mutated dinosaur was gaining on her.
Desperation gnawed at her mind as she scanned her surroundings for any advantage. The trees were too thick to climb, and there was no sign of a clearing ahead. She had to think fast. Her rifle was powerful, but it wouldn’t be enough to bring this thing down in one shot—not with its thick, mutated hide protecting it like armor.
A narrow ravine appeared to her right, its rocky walls descending sharply into the earth. Without hesitation, Hannah veered toward it, hoping the creature would have difficulty following her down the steep incline. She scrambled down the rocks, dirt slipping beneath her feet as she descended into the darkness. Above her, the creature skidded to a halt at the edge, letting out an enraged bellow that echoed through the ravine like thunder.
For a moment, Hannah thought she was safe. But the reprieve was short-lived. The creature, unwilling to let its prey escape, began to thrash at the ravine’s edge, causing the ground to quake. Rocks tumbled down toward her, and she had to dive out of the way as debris showered her.
"Okay," she muttered to herself, pushing herself to her f
