Sue Storm: Bulwark of Hope ANIMATION

The Vitreous Marrow

The transparency of a soul is a myth told by those who have never had to disappear. Susan Storm knew the weight of being unseen. It was not a lightness of being, but a heavy, pressurized exclusion from the visual spectrum. As she stepped over the threshold of the Whispering Weald, the air did not just turn cold; it turned expectant. The forest did not consist of oak or pine, but of something far more ancient and far less biological. The trees were pillars of ossified calcification, their branches reaching upward like the bleached ribs of a gargantuan, buried beast. There was no wind, yet the grey moss draped over the bears-teeth branches swayed with a rhythmic, pulsing motion, as if the woods themselves were breathing through a singular, necrotic lung.

Sue did not use her flare. To do so would be to invite the attention of the things that lived in the marrow of these trees. Instead, she moved with a practiced, predatory grace, her blue uniform a stark, synthetic contrast to the monochromatic decay of the grove. She was hunting a leak—not of information, but of reality. Something was hemorrhaging the life force of the surrounding townships, dragging the essence of the living into this silent, bone-white sanctuary. Her brother would have burned the forest down. Reed would have measured the atmospheric pressure. Ben would have started swinging. But Sue, the woman who lived in the spaces between atoms, understood that some monsters could only be fought by the person who knew how to become nothing.

"You walk with the silence of a ghost, yet your heart beats like a panicked drum," a voice drifted from the canopy, resonant and slick, like oil poured over velvet. "It is a lovely dissonance, Susan of the Storm. It sounds like a countdown."

Sue stopped. She didn’t look up immediately. She extended a thought, and a shimmering, hemispherical membrane of psychic force rippled into existence around her. It was subtle, a mere distortion of the air, like heat rising from a summer road. "I’ve been called many things, but a countdown is a first. Usually, I'm the one who stops them."

"Does one stop the sunset?" The speaker descended, not by falling, but by unfolding from the shadows of a particularly gnarled bone-tree. He was tall, gaunt to the point of structural impossibility, clad in robes that appeared to be woven from the gossamer wings of dead moths. His skin was the color of a bruised lily, and his eyes were two orbs of polished onyx that reflected nothing. This was Malphas, the Marrow-Singer, a sorcerer whose pedigree was written in the lineage of the grave.

He landed softly on the carpet of crushed vertebrae that served as the forest floor. He did not attack. Instead, he bowed, a gesture that was both elegant and profoundly mocking. "I have watched you from the periphery of the void for a long time. You are the only one of your kind who interests me. The others are loud, vibrant, and vulgar. But you... you are an architect of the vacuum. You understand the beauty of the absent."

"If you've been watching, you know I’m not here for a compliment," Sue said, her voice steady, though the sheer wrongness of his presence made the hair on her arms stand up. She adjusted the density of her field. "The people you’ve taken from the valley. Return them, and I might let you crawl back into whatever tomb you climbed out of."

Malphas chuckled, a sound like dry leaves skittering across a tombstone. He began to circle her, his movements fluid and hypnotic. "Return them? They are the pigments for my masterpiece, Susan. You see a forest of bone; I see a gallery of potential. And you... you are the missing light. Or rather, the missing shadow. Do you know how lonely it is to be the only thing in the universe that truly understands the dark? I am not a kidnapper. I am a curator. I am offering you a position of prominence in a world that will never overlook you again."

"Is that your version of a pick-up line?" Sue asked, her eyes tracking him. She felt the necrotic energy of the forest beginning to press against her shield, testing for a fracture. It was a cold, oily sensation. "Because I've heard better from a man made of orange rocks."

Malphas paused, his onyx eyes narrowing. "You mask your fear with sarcasm. It is a common defense of the fragile. But I see the way you look at these trees. You recognize them, don't you? You recognize the stillness. You spend your life making yourself invisible so that you don't have to be seen, yet you ache for
