Madelyne Pryor: Witch of Limbo ANIMATION
The Echoes of Ash and Lace
The scent of ozone and burnt lace always preceded the arrival of the unmade. Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen of a fractured New York, stood atop a dais of obsidian that pulsed with the rhythmic, sickly thrum of a dying heart. Her gown, a midnight silk that seemed to drink the meager light of the Limbo-touched sky, billowed around her ankles like a gathering storm. She was not merely beautiful; she was an architectural achievement of grace and malice, her hair a cascade of copper fire that defied the gravity of her crumbling kingdom.
Below her, in the courtyard of the Glass Sepulcher, the air began to curd. It didn't ripple; it bruised, turning a violet shade of trauma before tearing open. From the jagged rifts stepped the Unfinished. They were Madelyne, and yet they were insults to her form. One lacked skin, her musculature exposed and weeping a translucent, floral-scented ichor. Another was composed entirely of flight manifests and charred cockpit dials, her eyes two glowing altimeters spinning toward zero. A third was a porcelain doll with cracked cheeks, leaking the smell of antiseptic and old nursery rhymes.
"You’ve come home early," Madelyne said, her voice a low cello hum that carried a serrated edge. "I haven't even set the table for a family reunion. And look at you—not a single one of you is wearing a face that fits."
The Skinless One took a step forward, her exposed larynx clicking with every movement. "Mother," she hissed, though the word sounded like wet leather tearing. "Why do you cling to the throne of a lie? We remember the nursery of glass. We remember the man with the ruby eyes and the sterile hands. You aren't a queen; you’re a line of code in a petri dish that learned how to bleed."
Madelyne tilted her head, a cruel smile dancing on her lips. "Is that the story we’re telling today? The Sinister Lab? How quaint. I’ve always found the 'test tube' narrative a bit too industrial for my tastes. It lacks a certain… poetic flair."
"You are the dream of a dying god!" shrieked the Porcelain Clone, her voice a high-pitched splintering of glass. "The Phoenix looked for a vessel and found a void. You are the soot left behind when the fire moved on. You didn't even happen, Madelyne. You’re just the smoke's memory of the flame."
The army of failures began to circle the dais, a shifting kaleidoscope of discarded identities. They didn't attack with claws or steel, not yet. They attacked with the weight of their own existence, each one a psychic anchor dragging at Madelyne’s sense of self. The air grew heavy with the smell of wet earth and laboratory bleach, a sensory war between the mystic and the mundane.
"The Phoenix," Madelyne mused, stepping down the first obsidian stair. The movement was a slow, deliberate seduction of the space around her. "That’s the one Scott prefers, isn't it? It makes his betrayal so much more palatable if I’m just a cosmic echo. A metaphysical mistake. It’s so much easier to leave a ghost than a woman."
She reached out, her fingers brushing the cheek of a clone whose lower half was a tangle of rusted aviation wire. "And what about you, little scrap? What lie do you carry in your throat?"
The Wire-Woman looked up, her eyes weeping oil. "You were a pilot," she whispered, her voice a haunting echo of a cockpit radio. "You crashed in the mountains, and the snow ate your name. Everything after the impact is just a hallucination your brain hallucinated to avoid the cold. There is no Scott. There is no Limbo. There is only the frost, Madelyne. Close your eyes and let the winter finish its meal."
The horror of the suggestion rippled through the room. For a moment, the obsidian dais felt like cold, packed snow. The smell of jet fuel momentarily drowned out the scent of sulfur. Madelyne felt the phantom chill of high altitudes deep in her marrow. It was a masterpiece of gaslighting, a psychic assault designed to dissolve her very atoms into a puddle of doubt.
"A pilot," Madelyne whispered, her eyes fluttering. Then, she laughed. It was a rich, dark sound that shattered the illusion of the frost. "I do love a tragedy. But a pilot who dies in the snow doesn't get to wear a crown of thorns and command the demons of the pit. That’s far too mundane for a woman of my ambition."
She raised her hand, and the shadows in the room rose like loyal hounds. They didn't just move; they snarled. The Goblin Queen’s power was not just magic; it was the manifestation of every slight, every ab
