Tali: Tech Genius of the Stars by Jade Gretz

Tali’Zorah vas Normandy adjusted the environmental seal on her helmet, the acrid tang of volcanic fumes burning her nostrils. The desolate Quarian colony of Koris, once a bustling mining outpost, lay in ruins, a victim of a catastrophic eruption that choked the planet’s atmosphere and rendered it unlivable. Yet, it was here, amidst the ash-choked ruins that pulsed with a faint geothermal heat, that Tali had stumbled upon a chilling anomaly.

A flicker on her omni-tool, a cryptic signal unlike anything she’d encountered in her years with Shepard. It led her here, to a cavern half-buried by volcanic debris. Inside, bathed in an eerie luminescence emanating from smooth, obsidian-like walls, stood a machine unlike anything she’d ever seen.

It was a sphere, perfect in its symmetry, pulsating with an ethereal energy that seemed to distort the very air around it. Runes, alien and unsettling, glowed faintly across its surface. They were Quarian in origin, but ancient – antedating even the Migrant Fleet’s exodus from Rannoch. Tali felt a shiver crawl down her spine. How could something like this exist here, on a desolate world?

Curiosity, the quintessential Quarian trait, warred with a gnawing sense of dread. As she neared the sphere, the runes seemed to shimmer, beckoning her closer. Her omni-tool sputtered, its diagnostic programs failing to identify the alien technology.

She knelt before the sphere, her hand hovering inches away from its pulsating surface. A sudden surge of energy jolted her. The runes blazed momentarily, then subsided, leaving a single rune glowing a malevolent red.

A voice, a deep, resonant hum that felt more like a vibration through her bones, echoed through the cavern. It spoke in no known language, yet Tali understood its meaning with chilling clarity.

"Welcome, Daughter of Rannoch. We have waited for your arrival."

Tali scrambled back, heart pounding. Was it the machine that spoke? Was it… sentient? The Migrant Fleet’s archives spoke of dormant Prothean technology, but this felt different. Older. More… malevolent.

Fear turned into a cold resolve. Tali was a Quarian engineer. She was trained to solve problems, not run from them. Reaching for her omni-tool, she activated its recording function.

"Identify yourself," she commanded, her voice echoing in the cavern.

The deep hum returned, tinged with amusement. "Identify? We are the Keepers. We have awaited your return for millennia."

"My return?" Tali frowned. "I have never been here before."

"Not you, Daughter. Your kind. You are the inheritors of a power you cannot comprehend."

The red rune pulsed faster, and Tali felt a wave of nausea wash over her. Images flashed through her mind – barren planets devoid of life, swirling nebulas that writhed with unseen energies, and monstrous creatures of pure energy, their eyes devoid of any spark of intelligence.

Fear choked her. These images – were they the result of an alien weapon? A device of unimaginable power capable of unraveling the fabric of reality itself?

"Stop this!" Tali yelled, her voice strained. "Whatever you are, shut it down!"

The Keepers' laughter, like thunder rumbling in the distance, filled the cavern. "You cannot shut it down, Daughter. You are the key. You have awoken us."

Panic gnawed at Tali. She had to disable the machine. But how? She searched its surface, her eyes scanning for any sign of deactivation protocols. The runes seemed to shift and flow, offering no solution.

Suddenly, a memory surfaced – a lecture from Legion, the former Geth gestalt intelligence Shepard had briefly recruited. He'd spoken of ancient Prothean technology, guardians meant to protect against a cosmic entity known as the Reapers.

Could these Keepers be… protectors as well? But of what?

Just then, the red rune flared once more, a burst of energy ripping through the cavern. The air crackled with raw power, and the walls glowed with an ominous light. Tali stumbled back, bracing herself for what seemed like the inevitable.

But nothing happened. The energy subsided as abruptly as it erupted, leaving an unsettling silence in its wake.

The Keepers spoke again, their voice laced with urgency. "We are weakened, Daughter. Our defenses crumble. The Devourer stirs once more."

Tali's mind spun. The Devourer? Was it another name for the Reapers? Or something far worse?

"We… need your help," the Keepers continued. "You must channel you
