Miranda's Echoes of Perfection by Jade Gretz

Miranda Lawson stood on the observation deck of the Cerberus frigate, the Widow, surveying the sprawling slums of Omega. The stench of desperation and decay wafted upwards, a grim contrast to the sterile opulence of the ship's interior. She was here on Cerberus business – a quick recon mission to assess a potential smuggling operation.

Little did she know, she had walked into a nightmare.

A tremor ran through the Widow, shaking its metal frame. Alarms blared, red lights strobing rhythmically. Miranda's hand instinctively grasped her sidearm, a customized Cerberus pistol she'd named "Nemesis."

"What's happening?" she demanded, her voice sharp, eyes scanning the bridge for any sign of a threat.

"Unknown vessel approaching at high velocity, Captain," reported an unnerved crewman at the communications console. "Hostile intent confirmed. They're not responding to hails."

Miranda felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. Hostile encounters weren't uncommon in Omega's lawless sprawl, but this felt different. There was a calculated precision in the unidentified ship's approach, a chilling intent that made the hairs on her arms stand on end.

Moments later, the Widow lurched violently as the unidentified ship unleashed a barrage of energy fire. One of the frigates escorting them erupted in a ball of fire, showering the area with debris. Panic began to rise amongst the crew, but Miranda slammed her fist on the command console, her voice resonating with a steely authority.

"Everyone at their stations! We engage!"

She knew a straight-up fight with an unknown enemy, especially one this aggressive, was a gamble. They needed to jump into the hyperspace relay in Omega's orbit if they had any chance of escape.

"Engineer, prepare for immediate jump!" she barked, her eyes narrowed in concentration.

But it was too late. The unidentified ship, a sleek, obsidian vessel unlike anything Miranda had ever seen, unleashed a pulse of crackling energy that enveloped the Widow. The ship's systems went haywire, alarms blaring into a cacophony of electronic shrieks.

The jump failed. The Widow shuddered violently, trapped in a localized space anomaly. Miranda felt her stomach lurch as the lights flickered and died, plunging them into an eerie darkness.

"Emergency lighting!" she yelled, the urgency evident in her voice. A dim, red emergency lighting cast long, unsettling shadows across the bridge.

Then, a voice crackled through the intercom, distorted and laced with a chilling malice. "Miranda Lawson," it hissed, the sound sending a jolt of terror down her spine. "We've been waiting for you."

Miranda froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a cold dread pooling in her stomach. She knew that voice, the echo of a tortured past she thought she had buried long ago.

"Kai Leng," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the din of the failing ship.

Kai Leng, a rogue Spectre, a monster forged by Cerberus' darkest experiments, had been presumed dead. Now, his voice dripping with venom, he was back, and his target was clear.

The intercom sputtered, then went silent. In the ensuing darkness, Miranda's mind raced. Kai Leng wouldn't be after a simple kill. He wanted revenge, a twisted retribution for everything that had transpired between them.

The emergency lights flickered back to life, revealing a chilling sight. A single figure stood at the bridge entrance, shrouded in shadow. Black armor, augmented with cybernetic enhancements, glinted in the dim light. The crimson glow of his visor bore into Miranda, sending shivers down her spine.

"So kind of you to answer my call, Miranda," Kai Leng's voice was a low growl, devoid of any warmth. His eyes, burning red behind his visor, seemed to relish her fear.

A tense standoff ensued. Miranda, despite the terror gnawing at her, stood her ground, her hand never straying far from Nemesis.

"What do you want?" she finally forced herself to ask, her voice hoarse.

"Justice," Kai Leng snarled, taking a menacing step forward. "For what Cerberus did to me. And for the humiliation you inflicted."

Memories flooded Miranda's mind – a Cerberus lab, twisted experiments, a broken Kai Leng forced into her custody. It was a past she'd tried desperately to outrun.

"You were a monster, Kai Leng," she countered, her voice regaining its characteristic fierceness. "A weapon."

"And who created that weapon?" His voice echoed with a
