Rain lashed against the castle walls, a relentless drumming that mirrored the frantic beat of Elisa Maza's heart. Tonight's patrol with Goliath and Brooklyn felt different, the air thicker with a sense of foreboding that pricked at the hairs on her arms.
Soaring above the rain-slick cityscape, illuminated only by flashes of lightning, Elisa scanned the sprawling metropolis. Usually, Gotham pulsed with a familiar chaos, but tonight, an unsettling quiet hung heavy over the city, a silence punctuated only by the howling wind and the incessant drumming of the rain.
"Something's wrong," Brooklyn muttered beside her, his granite gargoyle brow furrowed. His voice, rough and gravelly, echoed in her earpiece.
Elisa couldn't agree more. Intuitively, she steered towards the abandoned amusement park, a decaying monument to forgotten laughter and joy, a place Goliath and the clan often patrolled due to its propensity for attracting unwanted shadows.
As they approached, a sense of oppressive darkness emanating from the park washed over them. Gone were the usual flashes of neon and the skeletal outlines of rusted roller coasters. The park was blanketed in an unnatural darkness, so thick it seemed to swallow light itself.
Elisa felt a shiver run down her spine. This wasn't a power outage; it was something more sinister. Goliath swooped closer, his yellow eyes glinting with concern. "Elisa," his deep voice rumbled through the communication system, "Be on guard."
Landing on the cracked pavement of the entrance plaza, they found the park gates twisted open, bent like iron bars by an unseen force. A sense of dread settled upon them as they ventured deeper into the shadowed labyrinth of the park.
The silence was deafening, broken only by the dripping of unseen rain and the frantic chirping of a lone trapped bird. Elisa's flashlight beam danced across decaying carousel animals, their painted faces contorted in grotesque smiles, seeming to mock their arrival.
Suddenly, a chilling moan echoed from the darkness ahead. It was unlike any sound Elisa had ever heard, a sound that resonated with a primal fear that twisted her gut. Goliath drew his stone sword, a reassuring weight against his back.
They entered a funhouse, the warped mirrors lining the walls reflecting distorted images of themselves. Elisa noticed a flicker of movement in one of the mirrors, a fleeting glimpse of a shadowy figure with eyes burning like malevolent embers.
Panic clawed at her throat. They weren't alone.
A harsh laugh, devoid of humor and filled with a terrifying malice, resonated through the chamber. The warped reflections in the mirrors began to writhe and distort, morphing into monstrous parodies of Elisa and Goliath.
"Welcome, Gargoyles," the voice hissed, an unnatural rasp that seemed to crawl through their very bones. "Welcome to my realm of nightmares."
The mirrors shattered, spewing forth shadowy figures. They were tall and slender, their bodies skeletal and clad in tattered black cloaks. Their faces were obscured by darkness, except for two glowing red orbs that pulsed with malevolent energy.
A fight erupted. Elisa, using her combat training and agile reflexes, ducked and weaved around the shadowy figures. Goliath, a whirlwind of stone and fury, cleaved through them with his sword, but for every one felled, two more materialized from the shattered mirrors.
These weren't normal attackers. They didn't bleed, and their touch seemed to drain the very life force from anything it came in contact with. Fear, once a distant emotion, surged through Elisa, a cold paralyzing presence.
Suddenly, a new voice joined the cacophony. A booming laugh, deep and resonating, echoed through the funhouse. A gargantuan figure materialized from the shattered remains of a mirror – a hulking behemoth with skin as black as night and eyes like burning embers.
"Vexing these mortals again, Shadows?" the behemoth roared, his voice a force of nature. "They're not your playthings!"
The shadowy figures recoiled, their forms flickering with fear. Elisa recognized the newcomer in a heartbeat. It was Demona, the rogue gargoyle, their former enemy, now seemingly an unlikely ally.
"Demona?" Elisa gasped, bewildered.
"Don't get mushy, Detective," Demona growled, her eyes still locked on the behemoth. "We have bigger problems."
With a snarl, Demona launched herself at the behemoth. They collided in a clash of darkness and fire.
