Demona: Nocturnal Wrath ANIMATION

The Glass Anatomy of Spite

The sunset did not bring the usual tectonic relief of flesh liberating itself from the prison of granite. For Demona, the transformation usually felt like a slow-motion explosion, a thousand years of jagged history rushing back into her veins with the heat of a furnace. Tonight, however, the stone did not crumble; it shivered. As the last sliver of the Manhattan sun dipped behind the jagged teeth of the skyline, the cracks in her skin didn't weep dust. They bled light—a cold, artificial violet light that tasted of ozone and clinical cruelty. She stepped off her pedestal atop the derelict cathedral, her wings unfurling like the sails of a ghost ship, yet her breath hitched. The air smelled of herself. Not the scent of the city’s grime or the metallic tang of blood, but the sterile, terrifyingly familiar scent of her own genetic signature, amplified and stripped of its soul.

She glided toward the lower districts, her eyes glowing a feral red that cut through the smog. The trail was loud, a psychic scream that only she could hear. Someone had been playing God with the scraps of her immortality. Thailog had been a nuisance, a pale imitation driven by greed, but this was different. This was a leak in the universe. She followed the scent to a decommissioned Gen-U-Tech facility buried beneath the foundations of a luxury high-rise, a place where the architecture shifted from Art Deco opulence to the brutalist geometry of forbidden science. The steel doors had been torn outward, the metal curled like charred paper. There were no bodies, which was worse. There were only smears of iridescent fluids and the rhythmic, wet thud of something heavy moving in the dark.

"I expected a grander welcoming committee," Demona said, her voice a low, melodic rasp that echoed off the reinforced concrete. She held her laser rifle with the casual grace of a predator, though her talons twitched. "Sevarius usually prefers a fanfare of self-congratulation before his failures try to eat him. Or have you already disposed of the help?"

A laugh emerged from the shadows—a sound that was a perfect, horrific harmonic of her own. It didn't come from a throat; it seemed to resonate from the walls themselves. "The help was delicious, mother. But they were so... singular. All their thoughts were about retirement funds and the temperature of their coffee. They had no room for the music of the spheres. Or the music of the slaughter."

Out of the gloom stepped a figure that froze the marrow in Demona’s bones. It was her. But it was a Demona who had never known the weight of a thousand-year sleep. The creature was taller, its skin a luminous, unblemished blue that seemed to shift like liquid under the flickering fluorescent lights. Where Demona’s wings were scarred and weathered by centuries of war, this creature’s wings were translucent membranes of shimmering gossamer, pulsing with that same violet light. Most unsettling were the eyes—they were not red, but a bottomless, swirling silver, devoid of pupils, reflecting a version of the world that was already dead.

"You look at me and see a mirror," the clone said, circling Demona with a predatory fluidity that defied the laws of gargoyle biology. "But I am the window. You are the gargoyle who clings to the ruins of a broken heart. You hate humans because they betrayed you. You hate the world because it forgot you. How tiresome. How... pedestrian. I hate because it is the only logical response to a universe that dares to exist without my permission."

Demona raised her rifle, the barrel humming as it charged. "You are a mistake of chemistry. A smear of DNA in a petri dish that learned how to mimic the speech of its betters. I have survived the collapse of empires, child. You won't survive the hour."

The clone didn't flinch. Instead, she leaned closer, the scent of her skin overwhelming—lavender and rot, honey and lightning. "You talk of survival as if it were a virtue. It’s a habit. A boring, repetitive habit. You restrain yourself because you still want to be a queen. You want a throne. You want the humans to bow before they burn. I don't want them to bow, Demona. I want to see what the color of their fear looks like when I unravel their DNA like old sweaters. I have no restraint because I have no ego. I am just the hunger of the void, wearing your face as a joke."

With a speed that bypassed the visual cortex, the clone lunged. There was no clash of steel, only the sound of reality tearing. Demona fired, the ruby b
