Hannah Dundee had always prided herself on a certain wildness — an untamed spirit that thrived in the wilderness of Prehistoric Earth. Her journeys through the expansive lands often brought her face-to-face with the majestic creatures of a bygone age, but nothing could have prepared her for what lay ahead when a sudden storm forced her off course.

The sky darkened, turning angry shades of purple and gray, while the trees danced violently in the wind. Thunder rumbled like an angry beast, swallowing the cries of creatures in the distance. As the first drops of rain fell, Hannah’s instincts kicked in. She had to find shelter — and quickly. Scanning the thick treeline that lined her path, she spotted a narrow trail that seemed to disappear into the dense foliage. It was a gamble, but staying out in the open meant a fierce pounding by the elements. She pressed forward, her heart racing as she dashed into the verdant embrace of the jungle.

Within moments, the sounds of the storm faded as the thick canopy overhead shielded her from nature’s wrath. Oftentimes the jungle was alive with the hum of insects and calls of exotic birds, but now an unnatural silence enveloped her. The air felt heavy, thick with humidity, and tinged with something primal that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand upright. She could feel it, an uneasy presence lurking just beyond the edges of her vision. Dismissing the chills along her spine, she opted to keep moving deeper into the jungle.

The further she ventured, the more the atmosphere shifted. Shadows twisted between the trees, and the very ground beneath her feet seemed to pulse with life — an unsettling heartbeat that echoed her own rising anxiety. Hannah stopped to catch her breath, lifting her eyes to the treetops where vines hung like the serpentine arms of ancient gods, ready to snatch at any intruders. As she leaned against a tree, she considered that perhaps she had trespassed into a place where few dared to tread.

Suddenly, there was a rustle in the underbrush, quick and sharp, like nails raking against bark. Hannah’s pulse quickened. Fighting her instinct to run, she squinted into the murky depths of the verdant labyrinth, ears straining for any additional sound. Then, a chilling shriek echoed, high and eerie, unmistakably filled with hunger. The raptors. Hannah had read about them, known of their cunning and ferocity, but nothing could compare to the visceral terror rippling through her now as the realization settled over her like a dense fog.

Determined not to show fear, she backtracked swiftly, choosing to retrace her steps along the path. The rustling sounded again, closer this time, sharper. A low growl rumbled in the distance as if the jungle itself had come alive, surrounding her in a cocoon of impending doom. She needed to think fast. Where could she hide? Her mind raced with recollections from her countless adventures, searching for refuge in a world where survival of the fittest reigned supreme.

As she sprinted through the greenery, narrowly dodging thick branches that whipped at her like whips, Hannah caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye. There, amidst the ferns, she saw the unmistakable sleekness of raptor feathers glistening faintly in the dim light. Panic surged as she veered left, her breath coming in short gasps. Each thud of her heart was matched by the echoing footsteps behind her. She didn’t need to look back to know they were hot on her trail.

With no clear thoughts of safety, her instincts kicked in—survival instincts honed through years of existing alongside nature’s most formidable creatures. Her mind flashed to a nearby hollowed-out tree trunk, the remnants of what must have once been a gargantuan ancient tree. Forcing her body to quicken, she lunged for it, arms outstretched as she dove inside, praying it would provide concealment from her hungry pursuers.

At first, the darkness engulfed her as she pressed her back against the rough, mossy interior of the trunk. The muted sounds of the jungle faded momentarily, replaced by the thunderous pounding of her own heart. With bated breath, she listened intently, hoping against all hope that the raptors, those malevolent predators, would pass her by. She could hear them snarl and chatter amongst themselves, their breaths ragged and wild, as they swept past her hiding place.

Time moved differently inside the hollow trunk, stretching endlessly as she remained motionless. Minutes felt like hours, each second w
