Scream: Depths of the Void by Jade Gretz

Rain lashed against the grimy windowpane of the motel room, mirroring the storm raging inside Patricia Robertson. Fear, a persistent tenant these past few weeks, coiled in her gut. She, Patricia 'Pat' Robertson, a tenacious but under-appreciated investigative journalist, had stumbled upon something bigger than she ever imagined – a corporate conspiracy involving a terrifying, alien threat.

It started with a tip – a cryptic email from a source calling themself 'Symbiote X.' The email detailed a research facility owned by the monolithic Aethon Corporation, rumors of their involvement in unethical experimentation, and something they called "Project Agony." Driven by a journalistic fire that refused to be extinguished, Pat had dug deeper, uncovering whispers of strange accidents, disappearances of scientists, and security footage hinting at monstrous, shifting creatures within the facility's heavily guarded walls.

The email had also mentioned a 'living weapon.' Intrigued yet terrified, Pat had traveled to a rundown town that served as a gateway to Aethon's research complex. Now, hunched over a laptop screen littered with grainy security footage, she watched as a monstrous creature, its form a grotesque amalgamation of writhing, black tendrils, erupted from a containment pod, its enraged screams echoing through the sterile laboratory. It was unlike any bioweapon she had ever seen. But what truly chilled her to the bone was the scientists' reaction ? not fear, but a chilling exhilaration.

A knock on the door made her jump. She spun around, her hand instinctively hovering near the pepper spray concealed in her purse. It was John, a local conspiracy theorist who had become an unlikely ally. John, with his wild theories about alien invaders and government cover-ups, had unexpectedly proven more helpful than she initially thought, providing her with intel and a safe house.

John entered, his rain-soaked trench coat dripping puddles onto the threadbare carpet. "Got you something," he said, pushing a bulky backpack towards her. "A little help from a friend on the inside."

Pat cautiously unzipped the bag, her heart hammering against her ribs. Inside, nestled amongst survival gear, sat a sleek, black device with a single blinking red light. John explained it was an invisibility disruptor, capable of rendering someone visible who was trying to stay hidden.

"That's… incredibly illegal," Pat said, a nervous chuckle escaping her lips.

"Desperate times, Pat," John replied, his usually wide eyes filled with a grim determination. "I looked into Project Agony. It ain't about weapons. They're trying to control something… something they call symbiotes."

Pat's blood ran cold. Symbiontes. Alien parasites that bonded with hosts, granting them power at a terrible cost. Tales from fringe science publications and discarded horror novels flashed through her mind. Could it be true?

"Tonight," John continued, his voice low, "we're going to take a little peek inside Aethon."

Pat understood the dangers, the near suicidal nature of their plan. But the truth, the horrific truth they were uncovering, outweighed her fear. She couldn't let this go unreported. She couldn't be a bystander while something monstrous was unleashed.

The night of the infiltration arrived, a black void shrouded in the incessant drumming of the rain. Dressed in dark clothing, equipped with the invisibility disruptor and a stolen security badge (courtesy of John's 'friend'), Pat felt like a character from a bad spy movie.

Aethon's research complex loomed before them, a sprawling behemoth of cold, imposing steel and flickering security lights. John, ever the pragmatist, provided a distraction – a staged car accident that would hopefully draw away some of the guards. While the commotion raged outside, Pat snuck in, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

The research facility was a labyrinth of sterile corridors and gleaming laboratories. The air hummed with the low thrum of machinery and the distant screams of unseen creatures. Using the stolen badge, Pat gained access to a restricted area – the holding cells for the symbiotes.

Through reinforced glass windows, she saw them. Glistening black masses, pulsating with an unnatural life force. Each one pulsed with a unique frequency, a horrifying chorus of potential power and raw, alien hunger. But amongst them, one stood out.

It was larger, its form shifting and swirling as if in constant agitation. I
