Chapter 7: The Whispers in the Wax Museum

Gotham had a sickness that night. Not a physical one, though chills certainly rippled down spines and goosebumps rose with alarming frequency. It was a sickness of silence, a hollowness that settled in the air after the city's usual symphony of honking cabs and sirens. The power had flickered out moments before Selina Kyle, alias Black Cat, arrived at the imposing wrought iron gates of the Falcone Wax Museum.

An unsettling calm blanketed the gothic structure. The gargoyles, usually leering grotesquely, seemed to hold their breath. Even the moon, a sliver peeking through the storm clouds, appeared dimmed, casting an eerie, shifting light on the polished marble steps.

Selina, ever the pragmatist, dismissed the unsettling atmosphere as mere nerves. Tonight's target wasn't a vault overflowing with diamonds or a mob boss' secret stash. It was something far more curious – a fabled Egyptian artifact, the Eye of Bastet, rumored to grant the power to control shadows. An intriguing trinket for a woman who thrived in the darkness.

Scaling the museum wall was child's play for Selina. Years of honing her agility as Black Cat had turned her into a human spider. Inside, the silence was amplified, broken only by the rhythmic drip-drip of unseen water. The air hung heavy with the scent of old wax and a metallic tang that tickled the back of her throat.

The museum was a labyrinth of dioramas, each depicting a frozen tableau of history. Roman gladiators locked in eternal combat, a pharaoh surveying his gilded tomb, a tableau of the Salem witch trials complete with wide-eyed mannequins and a crackling pyre made of petrified wood. The craftsmanship was unsettlingly lifelike, the figures seeming to hold their breath, waiting for some unseen cue to spring back to life.

Reaching the Egyptian wing, Selina found the display for the Eye of Bastet empty. A velvet-lined case lay open, the space meant for the gleaming, cat-shaped amulet mockingly bare. Frustration bubbled up in her chest. Had she been misled, the artifact already snatched by another greedy soul?

Before she could dwell on it, a voice slithered into the silence. Cold, raspy, it seemed to emanate from the shadowed corners of the room. "Looking for something, Kitty Cat?"

Selina whirled around, hand instinctively reaching for the sleek, retractable claws hidden in her gloves. But there was no one in the immediate vicinity. Just the mannequins, their painted faces seeming to smirk with a malevolent amusement.

"Don't be shy," the voice purred, closer this time, laced with a hint of amusement. "You wouldn't want to be rude, would you?"

Suddenly, a spotlight flickered to life, illuminating a single display. It held a wax figure unlike any other. Crafted with terrifying detail, it depicted a woman with eyes as black as obsidian and a cruel twist to her crimson lips. Her long, ebony hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing a face that was beautiful and horrifying in equal measure.

But what truly sent a jolt of terror down Selina's spine was the glint on the figure's outstretched hand – the missing Eye of Bastet, pulsing with an unnatural light. As Selina watched, the figure's lips seemed to curl further into a smile.

"Ah, so you see me now, Black Cat," the voice hissed, and this time, it undeniably came from the wax effigy. "But the question is, can you see through my illusions?"

Terror, a primal fear that she hadn't felt since her childhood days on the harsh streets of Gotham, gripped Selina. Talking wax figures? This was something straight out of a nightmare.

"Who… what are you?" she stammered, her voice barely a whisper.

The figure laughed, a hollow, echoing sound that seemed to rattle the very walls of the museum. "I am Bast," it declared, its voice dripping with a chilling power, "Goddess of Cats, of the Night, and of… shadows."

Suddenly, the museum plunged into darkness once more. Panic clawed at Selina's throat. The mannequins, once inert, seemed to stir in the gloom. Their painted eyes gleamed with a malevolent light.

A low growl echoed around her, predatory and hungry. Claws scraped against the floor, sending shivers down her spine. The shadows around her seemed to writhe and twist, taking on monstrous shapes.

Selina knew she was outmatched in a straight fight. Against a goddess who could control the very darkness itself, brute force wouldn't win. Thinking fast, she remembered the tales of
