The air was thick with an unnatural chill, a cold that seemed to seep into the very bones, as Lightning stood before the massive, foreboding gates of the fortress. This was no ordinary stronghold—it was a place steeped in darkness, an ancient bastion of despair that had stood for centuries, long before she had even been born. The fortress loomed against the starless sky, its towering spires reaching out like skeletal fingers, as if to claw at the heavens themselves.

Lightning’s sharp blue eyes narrowed as she studied the structure, her heart steady despite the malevolent aura that surrounded her. She could feel the presence of something ancient, something evil, lurking within those cold, stone walls. But she was not afraid. Fear had long since been burned out of her, replaced by an unyielding resolve.

Her comrades were inside, held captive by forces unknown, and she would not leave without them.

She adjusted the grip on her gunblade, the weapon glinting in the pale, ghostly light that seemed to emanate from the fortress itself. The blade felt reassuring in her hand, a reminder of her strength and skill, and of the countless battles she had fought and won. This would be no different, she told herself, even as a small voice at the back of her mind whispered that this place was unlike any she had faced before.

Lightning pushed the doubt aside. She had no time for hesitation, no room for fear. Her comrades needed her, and she would not fail them. With a final, resolute breath, she stepped forward, crossing the threshold into the heart of darkness.

The gates groaned open with a sound like the wailing of lost souls, the heavy iron doors swinging inward to reveal a long, narrow corridor shrouded in shadow. Lightning moved swiftly, her footsteps echoing off the stone floor as she made her way deeper into the fortress. The air grew colder with each step, the darkness thicker, pressing in around her like a living thing.

As she moved, Lightning remained alert, her senses on high alert for any sign of danger. The fortress was eerily silent, the only sound the faint rustling of the wind as it swept through the narrow windows high above. There was no sign of life, no indication that anyone else was here—but Lightning knew better. She could feel the eyes watching her, the presence of something malevolent lurking just beyond the edge of her vision.

She reached the end of the corridor and found herself standing before a massive door, its surface carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and writhe in the dim light. Lightning hesitated for a moment, her hand hovering over the handle. There was a dark energy emanating from the door, a pulse of malevolence that sent a shiver down her spine.

But she could not turn back. Not now.

She pushed the door open, and it swung inward with a creak, revealing a vast chamber beyond. The room was massive, its ceiling lost in the shadows above, and the walls lined with ancient, crumbling stone. At the center of the chamber stood a large, circular platform, surrounded by flickering torches that cast a dim, eerie light.

Lightning stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of her comrades. But the chamber was empty, save for a single figure standing on the platform, shrouded in shadow.

She approached cautiously, her gunblade at the ready, but as she drew closer, the figure stepped forward into the light, revealing itself.

Lightning’s breath caught in her throat.

It was her.

Or at least, it looked like her. The figure was a perfect reflection of herself, down to the last detail—the same sharp blue eyes, the same determined expression, even the same armor and gunblade. But there was something different, something off, about the reflection. It was in the eyes, the way they seemed to glint with a cold, malevolent light, and the twisted smile that curled at the corners of the reflection’s lips.

“You’ve come to rescue them,” the reflection said, its voice an eerie echo of Lightning’s own. “But you’re too late. They’re already lost, consumed by the darkness that dwells within these walls.”

Lightning tightened her grip on her gunblade, her heart pounding in her chest. “Where are they?” she demanded, her voice cold and hard. “What have you done to them?”

The reflection’s smile widened, and it took a step forward, its movements graceful and fluid, like a predator stalking its prey. “They’re here,” it said, spreading its arms wide. “They’ve become on
