Titania: Power Unchained ANIMATION

The Moult of the Emerald Sun

The air in the Florida Glades was a wet shroud, smelling of prehistoric decay and the sharp, metallic tang of something that did not belong in the natural order of things. Mary MacPherran, known to the fearful world as Titania, moved through the sawgrass with the deliberate, heavy grace of a tectonic plate. Her skin, a flawless and impenetrable bronze, shimmered under the bruised purple of a dying sunset. She was not here for the scenery; she had been summoned by a perfume—a lingering scent of ozone and expensive cologne that had no business drifting through a swamp where the only residents were supposed to be alligators and mosquitoes.

Ahead, the "Verdant Maw," an estate that combined the worst impulses of Art Deco opulence and brutalist military architecture, rose from the muck. It was a rogue cell of A.I.M. who had built this monument to hubris, a splinter faction that had grown tired of yellow hazmat suits and the pursuit of theoretical physics. They were the Saurian Synod, led by a man who believed that the Hulk was a mistake of timing rather than a miracle of science. Mary pushed open the front gates—ten-foot-tall wrought iron that groaned and then snapped under her touch like brittle sugar glass. She didn't sneak. Titania never had to sneak.

Inside the foyer, the heat of the swamp was replaced by a dry, refrigerated chill. The walls were lined with glass tanks, but they held no water. Instead, they contained translucent, glowing gels in which suspended reptilian embryos pulsed with a sickly, rhythmic green light. A man stood at the far end of the hall, leaning against a mahogany desk, swirling a glass of dark liquid. He wore a tuxedo that cost more than some of the neighborhoods Mary had grown up in. This was Dr. Aris Thorne, a man whose eyes held the cold, unblinking focus of a monitor lizard.

"You look even more magnificent in the flesh than you do in the SHIELD dossiers, Mary," Thorne said, his voice a velvet rasp that seemed to vibrate in the very floorboards. "The dossiers call you a powerhouse, a bruiser. They fail to mention the sheer, terrifying poetry of your form. You aren't just strong. You are the embodiment of the human desire to never be hurt again."

Mary didn't move. She stood with her feet planted, her presence filling the room, her shadow stretching long and jagged across the white marble floor. "Save the poetry for someone who doesn't know what it’s like to be small, Doc. I got your invitation. The one written in gamma-isotopes and left on my doorstep. You wanted a conversation, or are you just looking for a new specimen to put in one of your jars?"

Thorne laughed, a sound like dry leaves skittering over pavement. He walked toward her, not with the fear most men showed, but with a predatory curiosity. He stopped just inches from her, close enough for Mary to smell the expensive scotch on his breath and the faint, chemical bitterness of a laboratory. "I want to offer you a throne, Mary. You’ve spent your life as the hired muscle for gods and megalomaniacs. You’ve been the anvil for the world’s hammers. Don't you ever tire of being the secondary character in someone else’s apocalypse? My Synod has found the missing link between the resilience of the saurian and the volatility of the gamma-burst. We are creating a new apex. And we want you to be its queen."

He reached out a hand, his fingers hovering just above her bicep. The air between them crackled with a strange, static tension. "Think of it. No more hiding in the shadows of the Absorbing Man or the Masters of Evil. A world where your strength isn't an anomaly, but the blueprint. We have refined the process. We have taken the chaotic energy of the Hulk and filtered it through the cold, calculated survival instincts of the reptile. We have things in the basement, Mary, that make the Midgard Serpent look like a common garden snake."

Mary looked down at his hand, then back into his eyes. Her expression was a mask of bored indifference, but her heart, a muscle that could pump against the pressure of a mountain, gave a singular, heavy thud. "You talk a lot about 'we,' Thorne. But all I see is a man in a fancy suit playing with toys he doesn't understand. Strength isn't something you brew in a beaker. It’s something you earn when the world tries to crush you and fails. Show me these 'kings' of yours. I want to see what you think rivals me."

Thorne’s smile didn't reach his eyes. He turned and pressed a hidden panel on the mahogany desk. The fl
