Warrior of Worlds: Samus Ascends by Jade Gretz

The howling wind was the only welcome committee on Cryos IV. It flayed at Samus Aran's visor, sculpting the falling snow into frozen daggers that stung her exposed skin. Even through the thermal padding of her Power Suit, the planet's -200° bite seeped in, gnawing at her bones. Yet, despite the bone-chilling embrace, Samus felt curiously...alive.

This wasn't a typical Federation mission. No X-Parasites to purge, no Space Pirates to blast back to oblivion. The intel on Cryos IV was whispers from the fringes, hushed tales of an ancient leviathan slumbering beneath the perpetual ice, a creature older than the stars themselves. And Samus, ever drawn to the edge of the cosmic tapestry, had come to hear its silent scream.

She traversed the frozen plains, a crimson scar against the endless white. Her Power Suit groaned under the icy weight, her breath a fleeting plume in the howling air. The landscape offered no comfort, only jagged ice mountains spearing the frosted sky and glacial valleys echoing with the wind's mournful song.

Then, a tremor. A subtle shift in the earth, a low groan that vibrated through her boots. Following the tremor's whisper, she found it: a yawning chasm in the ice, a gaping maw promising secrets and shadows.

Descending into the crevice, the temperature plummeted further, an arctic abyss swallowing her whole. Crystalline caverns adorned the descent, glittering like diamonds scattered by a vengeful god. But their beauty was a cruel facade. From the shadows wriggled frost-skinned monstrosities, their icy claws tearing at her suit, their breath chilling her blood.

The battle was a ballet of frost and fire, her Plasma Beam spitting defiance against the encroaching darkness. Each shot left wispy trails of vapor, momentary scorch marks against the glacial canvas. One creature, a towering beast with eyes like frozen sapphires, almost breached her defenses, its icy claws scraping against the helmet, sending a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold.

Finally, she emerged into a cavern unlike any she'd ever seen. Towers of ice sculpted into impossible geometries, a frozen forest of crystals shimmered under a spectral light emanating from the cavern's heart. And there, nestled within the icy cradle, a leviathan stirred.

It was colossal, its form shifting through the shimmering light, impossible to grasp its entirety. Ice and bone merged into a grotesque tapestry, limbs like glaciers and spines like jagged mountain ranges. Its eyes, two frozen oceans, met hers, and Samus felt a primal terror grip her heart.

The creature wasn't just slumbering, it was dreaming. Dreams that bled into the caverns, warping reality itself. Glacial tendrils lashed out, freezing the very air they touched. The ground, no longer solid ice, became a treacherous labyrinth of shifting, creaking platforms.

Samus fought, a lone ember against the frozen tide. Her Power Suit groaned under the strain, the temperature pushing its limits. Her visor cracked, spiderwebbing with frost, the cold bleeding through. Yet, she fought on, driven by a desperate need to stop the leviathan's nightmare from claiming her, from spilling out into the cosmos.

Just as the cold threatened to claim her, she saw it: a pulsating core nestled within the creature's chest, the source of the spectral light. With a surge of adrenaline, she unleashed a Super Missile, the molten orb carving a path through the shifting ice.

The cavern shook as the creature shrieked, a sound that shattered the very bedrock. The spectral light sputtered and died, the leviathan's frozen dreams collapsing in on themselves. Ice shards rained down, burying the monstrosity once more, silence reclaiming the cavern.

Exhausted, her body ravaged by the cold and the battle, Samus stumbled out of the chasm. The sky, once an endless white, seemed a shade brighter, the wind a touch less harsh. Cryos IV had tested her, pushed her to the very edge of existence. But it had also awakened something within her, a cold fire that now burned in her emerald eyes.

The ancient leviathan lay slumbering once more, but its awakening had left a scar on Cryos IV, a whisper of what might have been. And Samus knew, with a cold certainty that chilled her even in the fading sunlight, that this was not the last time she would dance with the nightmares that slumbered at the edge of the universe.
