Chapter 23: The Echoes of Null
The Korean night sky, usually a canvas of twinkling defiance against the city's neon glow, was an oppressive curtain of inky black. D.Va, perched atop the crumbling Gwanghwamun Gate, surveyed the scene below with a gnawing dread that chilled her normally fiery spirit. Seoul, once a bustling metropolis, was now a graveyard of twisted metal and flickering emergency lights. The air thrummed with an unnatural silence, broken only by the distant, rhythmic clicks emanating from the approaching horde.
These weren't your typical omnics. Gone were the sleek, chrome bodies of the Destroyer or Bastion units. In their place lumbered hulking, skeletal monstrosities, their rusted frames pulsating with an eerie, bioluminescent green. Their vacant eye sockets, once filled with whirring gears, now housed flickering green orbs that seemed to pierce the very fabric of reality. D.Va gripped her Light Gun tighter, the reassuring weight a small comfort against the encroaching tide of techno-horror.
The first wave crested the rise, a grotesque ballet of rusted limbs and gnashing metal teeth. D.Va unleashed a torrent of pink bullets, the high-caliber rounds exploding against the enemy's frames in showers of sparks. The Light Gun, usually a source of exhilaration, felt sluggish in her hands, the recoil jarring unnaturally. Yet, the omnics seemed impervious, their forms shuddering momentarily before they continued their relentless march.
Panic gnawed at the edges of D.Va's bravado. These weren't machines; they were something… else. Their movements were erratic, spastic, devoid of the cold, calculating precision of omnics past. They reminded her of a pack of rabid dogs, their hunger a primal, terrifying thing.
Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet began to vibrate. A monstrous form, easily twice the size of a standard OR-14, emerged from the shadows. Its skeletal frame was adorned with jagged protrusions that pulsed with an sickly green light. Its single, cyclopean eye, the size of a car, swiveled towards D.Va, focusing on her with an intensity that sent shivers down her spine.
"Meka… malfunction…" D.Va stammered, her voice tight with fear. The cockpit lights flickered ominously, alarms blaring a discordant symphony of warning. Her neural interface sputtered, sending jolts of pain through her skull.
Ignoring the warnings, D.Va targeted the colossal omnic, pouring every ounce of her remaining courage into the attack. The Light Gun coughed and sputtered, firing erratically. One round found its mark, detonating against the monstrosity's chest cavity with a dull thud. The omnic shuddered, but continued its relentless advance.
With a sickening groan, the cockpit lurched violently. Smoke billowed from vents, the acrid smell of burning metal assaulting D.Va's senses. The neural interface flared, a searing pain ripping through her mind. Her vision swam, the once vibrant world outside dissolving into a kaleidoscope of static.
The last thing D..Va remembered before succumbing to the darkness was a chilling, distorted voice echoing through the ruined streets of Seoul: "Welcome… to Null…"
D.Va awoke to the sound of dripping water. Disoriented, she tried to sit up, a wave of nausea washing over her. Her head throbbed, the pain a dull ache behind her eyes. She found herself lying on a cold, damp floor, her mech nowhere in sight.
Panic surged through her. She was alone, vulnerable, in the heart of a nightmare. Struggling to her feet, she stumbled through the darkness, her hand brushing against a rough, uneven wall. A faint, flickering light emanated from the distance, drawing her forward like a moth to a flame.
As she approached, the source of the light revealed itself: a gaping hole in the wall, leading into a dimly lit cavern. Taking a deep breath, D.Va steeled herself and stepped through the opening.
The cavern was vast, its ceiling lost in the shadows. The air hung heavy with the stench of decay and a metallic tang that made her stomach churn. The flickering light came from strange, bioluminescent fungi that clung to the cavern walls, casting an eerie glow on the scene before her.
D.Va's heart hammered in her chest as she surveyed the cavern's depths. Scattered across the floor lay the mangled remains of omnics, their skeletal frames twisted and broken. But these weren't the monstrous ones she had faced earlier. These were the sleek, familiar forms of Null Sector. A horrifying realization dawned on D.Va –
