Miranda Lawson stood on the observation deck of the Normandy SR-2, the endless expanse of space stretching before her like a black shroud embroidered with a million cold, indifferent stars. Her breath plumed in the frigid air, leaving a trail of condensation that vanished almost instantly. Despite the biting cold, a shiver ran down her spine that had nothing to do with the temperature.
A year. It had been a year since Kai Leng, the ruthless Cerberus assassin, had taken Shepard. A year since she had last felt the warmth of his hand in hers, heard the echo of his sarcastic humor, or seen the unwavering determination in his eyes. A year of gnawing grief, a hollow ache that no amount of Cerberus training could erase.
But Cerberus, her former employer, wouldn't allow her the luxury of private grief. They had a new mission for her, a mission of utmost importance – infiltrate the Asari Republic's embassy on Elysium, the idyllic vacation world. Her target: Liara T'Soni, Shepard's former lover.
The thought made Miranda's blood run cold. Liara was a friend, a confidante, someone she had shared a fragile bond with during Shepard's absence. But Cerberus' orders were clear – retrieve any information Liara might have about Prothean artifacts, artifacts rumored to hold the key to defeating the Reapers, the ancient, machine race hellbent on galactic extinction.
Landing on Elysium felt like stepping into a surreal dreamscape. Pristine beaches lapped against turquoise waters, vibrantly colored flora carpeted the rolling hills, and luxurious resorts dotted the landscape. It was a stark contrast to the barren, war-torn planets Miranda was used to.
The Asari embassy, a gleaming white structure set on a hill overlooking the beach, felt equally out of place. As Miranda, disguised in a simple tourist outfit, approached the entrance, a pang of guilt gnawed at her. Liara had welcomed her, shown her hospitality when Cerberus had ostracized her for her ties to Shepard. Now, Miranda was here to betray that trust.
The embassy's interior was a testament to Asari artistry – flowing curves, water features that mimicked the soft gurgle of a flowing river, and murals depicting scenes of serenity and beauty. It felt more like a spa than a diplomatic center.
Miranda navigated the halls, her biotic implants humming as she scanned for Liara's presence. Finally, a soft light guided her to a secluded meditation room. Liara, draped in a flowing blue robe, her back turned, knelt before a pool of water reflecting the soft glow of an alien plant.
Miranda hesitated. The sight of Liara, so peaceful and serene, made the mission seem even more repugnant. But the memory of Shepard's determined face, his unwavering belief in saving the galaxy, pushed through the hesitancy.
Liara seemed to sense her presence. She turned, her sapphire eyes widening in surprise. "Miranda? What are you doing here?"
Miranda stepped forward, forcing a smile. "Just enjoying paradise, Liara. Thought I'd see how you were faring."
Liara's expression remained wary. "It's unexpected, your visit. Especially…" she trailed off, a flicker of pain crossing her face as she glanced at the empty space where Miranda knew Shepard usually stood.
"Yeah," Miranda said, her voice strained. "About that…." She launched into a fabricated story about being on leave, her longing for a vacation. Liara seemed to accept the explanation, though a sliver of doubt remained in her eyes.
As they talked, Miranda subtly scanned the room, searching for any sign of Prothean artifacts. To her disappointment, there was nothing. Just then, a tremor shook the building, followed by a series of muffled explosions.
Panic shot through Miranda. This wasn't part of the plan. The embassy was under attack, and from the sounds, it was a brutal one. An off-shoot terrorist group known as the Ascension, fervent believers in the Reapers' message of galactic cleansing, was responsible.
"What's happening?" Liara cried, fear trembling in her voice.
Miranda grabbed her arm, her voice firm. "Liara, this place is about to go under. We need to get out of here."
They navigated the embassy halls, dodging falling debris and panicked Asari guards. The building echoed with the screams of the dying and the battle cries of the Ascension soldiers. Fear turned to a cold fury in Miranda's gut. This unexpected attack had jeopardized her mission.
Reaching the main entrance, they found it blocked by heavy debris. S
