Samus Aran: Morph Ball Master ANIMATION
Beneath the Frostlung Abyss
Samus Aran had known cold before. She had fought on planets whose atmospheres froze sound itself, and she had walked through nebulae where the very light felt brittle. But nothing compared to the Arctic’s under-skin—the labyrinth of ice caverns beneath Earth’s northernmost sheet, a place researchers called the Frostlung Abyss, because every tunnel breathed like a sleeping beast.
She listened as the steady pulse of her suit’s heating systems reverberated through her bones. Frost crawled over the visor, melting instantly under the HUD’s thermal countermeasure. She wiped the last shards away with a flick of her wrist.
The deeper she moved, the quieter the world became.
Even her breath seemed hesitant to exist.
“Aran,” crackled the communication line, distorted by interference. Administrator Leto’s voice pulsed between bursts of static. “Your vitals are spiking. Elevating caution level.”
“Environmental hazard,” Samus replied calmly. “Temperature’s dropping below sensor range. And seismic activity is… irregular.”
“‘Irregular’?” Leto’s voice sharpened. “We’ve registered fissures opening across a hundred-mile radius. Entire ridges are collapsing. You’re close to the epicenter. Anything?”
“I’ll let you know when the ice stops whispering.”
The channel hissed, then quieted.
Samus advanced. The passageways narrowed behind her, closing like lips over the entrance, as if the glacier intended to swallow her whole.
The first sign of something wrong came in the form of light—blue phosphorescence writhing deep within the ice walls. Samus paused, raising an arm cannon.
The light wasn’t stationary. It slid like veins. Like nerves.
A voice—no, a memory—rose at the back of her mind.
Long creatures hide in long places.
She had heard that once from a Chozo elder, warning her about subterranean colossi that burrowed through frozen moons.
Another whisper slithered across the ice.
Not a memory. Not imagination.
A sound.
A scrape.
A heartbeat.
Samus muttered to herself, “If that’s the glacier’s way of saying hello, it’s lacking charm.”
Then the cavern ceiling cracked.
Samus dashed aside as a massive shell of ice broke away and plunged into the abyss. The impact sent a shockwave across the floor—and the ground beneath her split like an eyelid opening.
A roar—deep, echoing, impossibly long—rippled through the chasm.
A creature stirred.
Samus slid down a slope of splintered glacial glass, catching herself on a protruding edge of frozen mineral. Her visor scanned the void beneath.
The abyss pulsed.
A titanic shape moved within the shadows. At first she thought it a cliff shifting.
But cliffs didn’t breathe.
A wide, wormlike body—easily the length of a city block—dragged itself upward through the fissure. Its hide was plated with translucent ice, each segment frosted into jagged armor. Beneath the plates glowed a network of cerulean arteries, slow and cold like liquid neon.
The creature’s head emerged: a crown of frozen tendrils, rows of glacial fangs, and eyes like polished moons—reflecting Samus back at herself in a thousand distorted ways.
Her suit pinged a hostile signature.
CRYO-WORM. TITAN-CLASS. STRUCTURAL TEMPERATURE: BELOW -180°C.
“Administrator,” Samus said, stepping back as the worm exhaled a gale of frigid vapor. “I’ve found your seismic source.”
“Describe it,” Leto asked, shaky.
“It’s big.”
“That’s it?”
Samus rolled her shoulders. “You want poetry while a glacier tries to eat me?”
The creature lunged.
Samus fired a superheated plasma shot.
The blast struck the worm’s armor and barely scratched it. Instead, steam exploded outward, coating the cavern with glittering crystals.
The worm shrieked. The ice around Samus shattered.
And the duel began.
