Commander Shepard stared across the holographic briefing table, a furrow etched deep between his brow. The Normandy's flickering emergency lights cast an unsettling glow on the holographic display – a stark image of a dilapidated mansion perched precariously on a cliff overlooking a stormy ocean.

"Miranda Lawson," Shepard began, his voice grim. "We received a distress call from your ancestral home, Lawson Manor. Apparently, your father, Henry Lawson, has been experiencing 'unnatural phenomena'."

Miranda, her Cerberus implants pulsing a faint blue beneath her porcelain skin, scoffed. "Unnatural phenomena? Sounds like my father finally cracked under the pressure of his own mediocrity."

There was a raw edge to her voice, a bitterness that belied the carefully constructed facade she usually wore. Shepard, despite being accustomed to Miranda's prickly exterior, sensed a deeper turmoil.

"That might be," Shepard conceded, "but the distress call was genuine. Sensors have picked up unusual energy readings emanating from the manor."

A flicker of something akin to fear crossed Miranda's icy blue eyes. "Energy readings? Are you suggesting... something like a rogue Cerberus experiment gone wrong?"

Shepard shook his head. "Cerberus wouldn't leave a trail this obvious. No, something else is at play here. We're going in."

The journey to Lawson Manor was eerily quiet. As they traversed the overgrown path leading to the mansion, a sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air. The once-grand manor, now shrouded in a veil of neglect, loomed over them like a skeletal mausoleum.

Miranda's hand tightened around her pistol, a stark contrast to the pristine white of her armor. Reaching the decaying front doors, Shepard placed a hand on them, a silent signal for Miranda to stand back while he breached.

The hinges screeched in protest as the doors yielded, revealing a dusty interior dimly lit by shafts of moonlight filtering through broken windows. The air hung heavy with the smell of mildew and something else – a metallic tang that caused a shiver to run down Miranda's spine.

Cautiously, Shepard and Miranda moved through the cavernous hall, Shepard's omni-tool illuminating their path. Broken furniture lay scattered like abandoned bones, and cobwebs draped across the walls like ghostly shrouds.

A sudden crash from upstairs sent them leaping for cover. Miranda, her Cerberus training kicking in, aimed her pistol towards the source of the noise. Shepard, equally prepared for combat, activated his combat shotgun.

But the sound they heard wasn't the thudding of boots or the metallic click of a weapon. It was a guttural growl, a sound that resonated with a primal fear in the pit of their stomachs.

With a shared glance, they ascended the creaking staircase, every step echoing ominously in the silence. Reaching the landing, they were greeted by a sight that defied logic and sent a wave of nausea crashing over Miranda.

Henry Lawson, the once-proud patriarch of the Lawson family, was no more. In his place stood a grotesque parody of a human figure. Flesh bulged and mutated, limbs twisted at unnatural angles, his face a mask of agony etched with an inhuman hunger.

Miranda stumbled back, a choked scream ripping from her throat. This couldn't be real. This grotesque creature couldn't be her father. But the pain reflected in the creature's single, exposed eye told a different story.

The creature charged, a monstrous roar echoing through the halls. Shepard reacted with lightning speed, firing a round of biotics that slammed the creature back against the wall. It was only a temporary reprieve.

As the creature lunged again, Miranda, fueled by a cocktail of terror and a twisted sense of familial obligation, found herself firing her pistol with a ferocity that surprised even herself. But the bullets, even with her Cerberus enhancements, barely seemed to have an effect.

Just as the creature was about to close on Shepard, another guttural roar ripped through the air. A figure, shrouded in shadows, materialized from the hallway behind them. It was Oriana, Miranda's younger sister, her face a mask of cold fury.

"Enough," she spat, her voice devoid of any warmth.

In her hand, she clutched a strange device that crackled with energy. As she aimed it at the mutated creature, Miranda recognized with a jolt of horror – it was Cerberus technology, twisted and modified for an unknown purp
