Jade, Edenia's Emerald Assassin, flitted through the moonlit palace gardens, a silent emerald blur. Tonight was different. Tonight, her agility carried a tremor of apprehension, a stark contrast to her usual unwavering focus.
She had snuck away from the monotonous royal banquet, escaping the suffocating expectations of her immortality. Tonight, she yearned for a simpler touch, a warmth that could only be found in the forbidden embrace of a mortal – Kitana's former bodyguard, Jarek.
Their bond, born during her time protecting Princess Kitana, blossomed into something unexpected. Jarek, with his guileless charm and earthy humor, offered an escape from the sterile immortality that stretched before her. But their love was a transgression, a clandestine affair whispered in stolen moments under the guise of training sessions.
Jade reached their secret haven, a hidden clearing bathed in the ethereal glow of moonlight. Disappointment washed over her as she found it empty. Jarek's usual bouquet of wildflowers lay trampled, a single crimson stain blossoming on a pristine white petal.
Panic clawed at her throat. Mortals were fragile creatures, susceptible to a myriad of dangers. Had Jarek fallen victim to a random attack? Or worse, had his association with her brought unwelcome attention?
A low moan echoed from the dense foliage bordering the clearing. Jade, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm, unsheathed her trademark staff, its emerald glow cutting through the darkness.
Fear turned to bone-chilling dread as the figure emerged. Jarek. But this wasn't the man she knew. His eyes, once filled with warmth, now burned with an unnatural crimson glow. His skin stretched taut over his frame, mottled with patches of a grotesque, sickly green.
"Jarek?" Jade whispered, her voice barely a tremor.
A ghastly smile stretched across his face, revealing rows of sharpened teeth. "Jade, my love," he rasped, his voice a guttural parody of his usual warm tone. "I've missed you."
The stench of decay assaulted her senses, confirming her worst fears. Jarek wasn't injured; he was infected. The whispers she had heard of a creeping Rot, a disease spreading across the Mortal Kombat Outworld, now had a face. A face she loved.
Grief battled with a fierce protectiveness within her. Jarek, even in this horrifying state, was still the man she loved. But that love couldn't blind her to the danger he posed.
"The Rot," Jade breathed, her voice filled with a chilling calm. "How did this happen?"
Jarek chuckled, the sound like dry leaves rustling in a cold wind. "A little gift from some Netherrealm scum. They promised power. Power to be with you forever."
His twisted gaze raked over Jade, lingering on the curves of her emerald armor with a sickening intensity. "Now, my love," he rasped, his voice low and predatory. "Join me. Let the Rot take you too. We can be together… eternally."
Tears welled in Jade's eyes, blurring her vision. She knew what she had to do, but the thought of harming Jarek, even in this monstrous state, tore at her heart.
Sorrow hardened her resolve. "I won't let the Rot consume you, Jarek," she declared, raising her staff. "And I won't be a party to your transformation."
The monstrous Jarek snarled, revealing razor-sharp claws. "Then you leave me no choice!"
He lunged. Jade, her movements fueled by grief and desperation, parried his attack. But Jarek was relentless, his inhuman strength overwhelming. The once-familiar clearing became a battlefield, the night air filled with the clash of steel and bone.
Jade fought with a ferocity born of love and loss. Every blow landed with the force of a grieving heart. But the Rot, fueled by Jarek's twisted love, made him a formidable opponent.
The battle raged, a macabre dance of love and violence. As Jade dodged a swipe of Jarek's claws, she saw a flicker of recognition in his crimson eyes, a fleeting glimpse of the man she loved.
Tears streamed down her face, a silent plea for a miracle. But there were no miracles in this cursed dance.
An opening presented itself. With a surge of adrenaline, Jade launched a powerful staff strike, sending Jarek crashing into a nearby tree. He lay there, a groaning, broken mess.
Grief gnawed at Jade, but she couldn't afford hesitation. The Rot, a parasitic entity feeding on Jarek's life force, wouldn't be easily subdued.
She raised her staff, its emerald glow
