### Sophitia’s Vigil: A Song of Blood and Shadows

The sky above the castle was a bruise of swirling clouds, the sun’s light fading behind the horizon as darkness crept closer. The wind carried the scent of ash and burning wood, whispering through the stone walls of the ancient fortress that had stood for centuries—an unyielding sentinel against the tides of war. But tonight, the winds carried another sound, more sinister—the distant clang of swords, the thrum of war drums, and the cries of the dying.

Sophitia Alexandra stood on the ramparts, her fingers tightening around the hilt of her sword, Elk’s Cry. The blade gleamed faintly in the dim light, its edge sharp and lethal, forged to protect the innocent. She had always been a defender, a servant of the gods, a warrior of righteous purpose. But tonight, as she looked over the horizon, the weight of her duty pressed heavily on her shoulders.

Below her, the castle courtyard was bustling with frantic activity. Soldiers rushed to reinforce the walls, carrying buckets of boiling oil, sharpened spears, and heavy crossbows. The peasants had been herded into the keep, their wide, terrified eyes staring up at her as though she were their only salvation. And in some ways, she was.

Sophitia knew that the castle walls could not hold forever. The invaders had come without warning, an army of shadow and flame, led by a monstrous commander whose name was spoken only in fearful whispers—Malphas, the Butcher of Ravenscar. His forces were unlike any she had faced before, a horde of twisted, unnatural beings, their bodies warped by some dark sorcery. They fought with a ferocity that defied reason, their eyes gleaming with madness, their flesh cold and lifeless.

They were not of this world.

As Sophitia’s gaze swept across the battlefield, her heart pounded in her chest. The invaders were like a black tide, pressing against the outer walls, their sheer numbers overwhelming. Her mind raced, trying to find a solution, some way to turn the tide. She had faced evil before—the cursed blade Soul Edge, the warriors who had been seduced by its dark power—but this… this was different. This was a nightmare made flesh.

“They are coming,” a voice spoke from behind her, low and somber.

Sophitia turned to see her sister, Cassandra, standing beside her. Her face was pale, her eyes hard, but there was a fire in them that mirrored Sophitia’s own resolve. Cassandra had always been the more reckless of the two, but in times like this, they were united in purpose.

“They’ve already breached the outer gate,” Cassandra continued, her voice grim. “It’s only a matter of time before they break through the inner walls. We’re outnumbered, Sophitia. And these… creatures… they don’t fight like men. They fight like beasts. I’ve seen them rip through our soldiers like wolves tearing apart lambs.”

Sophitia’s grip tightened on her sword. “Then we must be the ones to stop them.”

Cassandra hesitated for a moment, her expression softening. “Are you sure, Sophitia? We don’t even know what we’re up against. The gods have not spoken to us in days. It’s as though they’ve abandoned this place.”

Sophitia looked out at the battlefield, her heart heavy. She had always believed in the gods, in their guidance, their protection. But now, in this moment, she felt only silence. Yet she could not waver. She could not falter. If the gods would not help them, then she would fight in their stead.

“I’m sure,” Sophitia said, her voice steady. “The gods may be silent, but we are not. We will fight. We will defend this castle, these people, with everything we have.”

Cassandra nodded, though the doubt in her eyes remained. “Then I’ll stand with you, sister. Until the end.”

Sophitia felt a surge of warmth at Cassandra’s words, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, she was not alone. Together, they descended the ramparts, moving toward the front lines where the battle was fiercest. The sounds of war grew louder—the clash of steel, the screams of the wounded, the roars of the inhuman invaders.

As they neared the inner gate, Sophitia’s eyes widened in horror. The creatures had breached the defenses, their monstrous forms pouring through the shattered gate like a flood. They were tall and gaunt, their skin a sickly gray, their limbs elongated and twisted. Their eyes glowed a bright, unnatural yellow, and their mouths were filled with rows of sharp, jagged teeth. They moved with a disturbing, jerking motion,
