Cassie Cage had faced death before, but never like this.
The massive stone gates slammed shut behind her, the sound reverberating through the blood-soaked sands of the arena. The towering walls of the coliseum stretched up toward the dark, twisted sky of Outworld, trapping her in a nightmare she could scarcely believe. Thousands of Outworlders filled the stands, their guttural roars and jeers echoing off the walls. They were a sea of alien faces, all twisted in cruelty, watching her with hunger in their eyes. She was their entertainment. A mortal in their brutal gladiatorial pit.
Cassie took a deep breath, trying to focus. Her military training had prepared her for combat, but this was something entirely different. There were no rules, no objectives, no escape. The only law in this arena was survival, and the odds were stacked against her. In the center of the pit stood a massive obsidian statue of Shao Kahn, his hammer raised in triumph, casting a long, menacing shadow over the sands.
The air was thick with the scent of blood, sweat, and decay. The sand beneath her boots was damp, caked with the remnants of those who had fought and fallen before her. Somewhere in the distance, a gong sounded, and the crowd's cheers rose to a deafening crescendo.
Cassie gritted her teeth, her heart pounding in her chest. She flexed her fingers around her pistols, one in each hand. They were the only things she had managed to smuggle into this twisted tournament. Her tactical vest was long gone, shredded in an earlier skirmish, leaving her exposed save for a sleeveless shirt, pants, and boots. Her blonde hair was tied back in a tight ponytail, drenched in sweat and dust, but her green eyes burned with defiance.
A voice boomed from the heights of the coliseum, amplified by dark magic. It was deep and guttural, the voice of the arena master, Kotal Kahn’s enforcer.
"Welcome, weakling, to the gladiatorial arena of Outworld! A place where the strong survive, and the weak are slaughtered for sport!" The crowd erupted in raucous laughter. "Today, you face not only your death, but the honor of entertaining the emperor himself!"
Cassie raised her middle finger at the towering figure in the royal box, her lips curling into a smirk. “Yeah, well, tell Kotal I said he can shove it.”
The crowd hissed in anger, and the announcer’s voice turned venomous. "Prepare yourself, Earthrealmer, for you face not one... but three of Outworld's fiercest champions! Release the fighters!"
With a deep, echoing rumble, gates on the opposite side of the arena slid open, and from the darkness emerged her challengers.
The first to step into the light was a hulking figure, nearly seven feet tall. His skin was a mottled, dark green, covered in scales that glistened in the flickering torchlight. His massive arms rippled with muscle, and in one hand, he carried a spiked club the size of a tree trunk. His eyes were dead and soulless, but his snarl revealed rows of jagged, yellow teeth.
The second was a woman, smaller and faster, but no less deadly. Her lithe frame was draped in tattered armor, her face hidden behind a mask of twisted bone. Two long, serrated blades glinted in her hands, dripping with a viscous black liquid. Poison, no doubt. Her movements were unnervingly fluid, like a snake waiting to strike.
The last was a creature Cassie had never seen before. It stood on four legs, its body low to the ground like a massive predator. Its eyes burned with an unnatural red glow, and its jaws dripped with saliva as it prowled the edge of the arena. Its skin was leathery, stretched taut over a skeletal frame, and its elongated limbs ended in wicked, bone-like claws.
Cassie exhaled slowly. Three opponents, each deadlier than the last. She had fought monsters before—literal and figurative—but this was a new level of insanity. There was no backing down, no retreat. She could almost hear her dad’s voice in her head, his tough-love tone ringing out.
"Remember, Cage, you’ve got two choices: fight or die trying. And Cage’s don’t die easy."
The first to move was the brute. With a roar that shook the arena, he charged, his club swinging in a wide arc, aimed directly at her head. Cassie dove to the side, rolling across the sand as the club smashed into the ground where she had just stood, sending a spray of dirt into the air.
Before she could regain her footing, the female assassin was upon her. The twin blades sliced through the air, whistling with dea
