Red Monika: Burning Vengeance ANIMATION
The Vermilion Suture
Copper-scented rain hissed against the velvet of Monika’s cloak, a sound like a thousand tiny needles threading through the silence of the Bone-Grip District. Here, the architecture was less built and more birthed—rib-arches of calcified limestone rose toward a bruised sky, draped in tapestries of weeping moss. Red Monika did not walk so much as she haunted the pavement, her every movement a calculated insult to the concept of friction. Her hair, a cascading riot of crimson that defied the gloom, flickered like a dying sun against the obsidian plates of her armor. She was looking for a ghost, but in this city of rot, ghosts were the only things that paid in gold.
She stopped before the Great Ossuary, where the doors were carved from the fused femurs of giants. The scent hit her then—not the expected rot, but the cloying, invasive sweetness of night-blooming jasmine and cold iron. It was a scent she hadn't smelled in a decade, since the night the sky over the Iron Valleys had turned the color of a fresh bruise and the world had been torn in two. It was the scent of Silas Vane.
"You always did have a penchant for the dramatic, Monika," a voice drifted from the shadows above the lintel, smooth as silk dragged over a razor’s edge. "Though I see you’ve traded your discretion for a shade of red that screams for a firing squad. It’s loud. It’s vulgar. It’s exactly how I remembered you."
Monika didn’t reach for her pistols yet. She simply tilted her head, her eyes—the color of embers in a forge—scanning the gloom. Silas dropped from the rafters, landing with a silence that was its own kind of violence. He was her mirror, draped in charcoal leathers and midnight steel, his face a sculpture of pale angles and scars that mapped a history of narrow escapes. They stood in the center of the ossuary, surrounded by the silent witnesses of ten thousand skulls.
"Silas," she said, her voice a low purr that carried the weight of a sharpened blade. "I heard you died in the Siege of Pale-Reach. I even toasted to your memory. It was an expensive bottle, too. I feel quite cheated now."
Silas chuckled, a dry sound that rattled in his chest. He took a step toward her, his movements a perfect, unsettling mimicry of her own predatory grace. "Death is a lack of imagination, my dear. I simply found a better employer. One who doesn't mind a man with a hole where his conscience used to be. But we aren't here for nostalgia, are we? We’re both hunting the Heart of the Carrion King."
"Only one of us is hunting it," Monika corrected, her hand finally drifting toward the grip of her oversized revolver. "The other is merely providing the distraction before they bleed out on this very pretty floor."
The air between them thickened, charged with a static tension that made the fine hairs on Monika’s neck stand up. Silas didn't flinch. Instead, he reached out, his gloved fingers hovering inches from the pulse point at her throat. It was a gesture of profound intimacy and profound threat. "Do you remember the Grafting, Monika? The night the alchemists stitched our shadows together? I can still feel your heart beating when the moon is thin. It’s a rhythmic, dull thud that keeps me awake at night. I think I’d like to stop that sound."
"Then try," she whispered, her eyes narrowing. "But remember, Silas—if you kill me, you’ll spend the rest of eternity bleeding from wounds you didn't receive. That was the beauty of the Suture. We are the same tragedy, told in two different voices."
Without warning, Silas lunged. He didn't use a blade; he used a whip of braided silver wire that hummed with a dissonant frequency. Monika spun, her cloak billowing like a cloud of blood, and drew her pistols in a single, fluid motion. The first shot echoed through the ossuary, a thunderclap that shattered a dozen nearby skulls, but Silas was already gone, a blur of shadow moving along the curved walls.
The horror of the ossuary began to wake. The sound of their conflict, the vibration of the lead and the hum of the wire, stirred the residual memories etched into the bone-walls. Faces began to form in the lime—screaming mouths that produced no sound, eyes that rolled in stone sockets. The ground beneath their feet felt less like stone and more like compressed flesh.
"Is this the best you can do?" Monika shouted, firing again. The bullet grazed Silas’s shoulder, tearing through his leather to reveal skin that wasn't pink and raw, but grey and translucent, like parchment. "You’v
