Title: Into the Shadow's Grasp

The moon hung high, casting a silver glow over the abandoned industrial complex. Broken windows and rusting beams jutted out from the decaying structure, an eerie silence lingering in the air. Kitty Pryde, or "Shadowcat" as she was known to many, moved quietly across the rooftop. Her sharp eyes scanned the surroundings, her heart steady as she prepared herself for what lay ahead. She knew this place was dangerous, but it was where her target had chosen to hide — a mutant named Darius, infamous for his terrifying control over shadows.

Whispers had been circulating for months about a dark force in the city's underbelly, and after a series of disappearances, Kitty was sent to investigate. She'd been warned: Darius wasn’t just a criminal; he was a manipulator of pure darkness, able to mold shadows into deadly weapons. His powers were rumored to have grown so intense that entire blocks had gone dark, swallowed by his presence, and left to rot in fear.

Kitty took a deep breath and phased through the roof into the building below, landing silently inside an empty corridor. The smell of mold and decay assaulted her senses as she crept through the dimly lit halls. Her mind raced, thinking of how she could counter Darius’ abilities. Shadows couldn't hurt her if she could phase through them, right?

As she moved deeper into the complex, she noticed the shadows around her behaving strangely. They twisted unnaturally, reaching toward her like sentient creatures. Her hand instinctively brushed Lockheed’s hidden compartment in her belt, but her dragon companion remained back at base. She’d wanted to face this threat alone. Kitty paused, steadying her breath. Her pulse quickened, though she didn’t allow herself to show fear.

A soft chuckle echoed through the walls, unnerving her. “I can feel you, Kitty Pryde,” the voice of Darius rasped. It was deep, hollow, as if coming from the void itself. “Your fear... it’s delicious.”

Kitty’s eyes darted around, but she couldn’t pinpoint where the voice was coming from. The shadows on the walls thickened, writhing as if alive. Suddenly, they lunged at her, long, black tendrils of darkness trying to ensnare her limbs.

She instinctively phased, letting the tendrils pass through her, but something felt wrong. For a split second, as they passed through her, she felt a strange, chilling sensation, like cold fingers brushing against her soul. She shuddered but kept moving, her focus sharp.

“That won't work forever, Kitty,” Darius’ voice purred. “These shadows… they’re part of me. And I know your little trick.”

She quickened her pace, running through the corridors while shadows snapped at her heels. They twisted and curled, blocking her path. No matter how much she phased, she couldn't shake the feeling that the shadows were learning, adapting. She phased through another wall, emerging in what seemed to be a large control room.

Suddenly, the lights flickered violently before plunging the room into complete darkness. She cursed under her breath. In the pitch-black, the shadows were stronger — they were everywhere. Kitty felt something cold wrap around her ankle. In a flash, she phased, but this time the darkness held tight. A jagged, shadowy hand yanked her to the ground, pulling her toward the center of the room.

"Not so easy now, is it?" Darius’ voice whispered from all directions, growing closer.

Gritting her teeth, Kitty phased again, this time pulling herself free with all her strength. She scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering in her chest. The coldness of the shadows lingered, like an infection trying to seep into her skin.

Darius materialized in front of her, his form a silhouette, his eyes glowing a faint red. His figure was tall, shrouded in darkness that seemed to pulse with malevolent energy. His body was shadow, his edges indistinct and shifting. He smiled, showing teeth that gleamed in the dark. "You're in my world now, Kitty."

Kitty’s mind raced. She couldn’t fight him the way she would a normal opponent. His entire being was composed of shadows — and her usual tactic of phasing through attacks wouldn’t be enough. But that didn’t mean she was helpless.

“I’m not scared of the dark, Darius,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her mind. “I’ve faced worse monsters than you.”

He laughed, the sound echoing around her like a swarm of whispers. "Perhaps. But none that can swallow you whole."
