Supergirl: Battle for Justice, by Jade Gretz

A guttural snarl tore through the oppressive silence, echoing off the jagged black cliffs that formed the horizon. Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, shivered despite the absence of any physical chill. This wasn't a realm of frozen temperatures; it was a place where the very essence of hope had been vacuumed away, replaced by a suffocating darkness.

Days, or possibly weeks, had blurred together since Kara had been sucked through the swirling portal by Myrkr, a monstrous entity fueled by negativity. No sun shone in this desolate realm; the only light came from sickly green pulsating fungi that clung to the obsidian rocks. Even Kara's superhuman vision offered little solace – the endless expanse of black was like a suffocating blanket pressing in on her.

The whispers were the worst. They started insidious, barely audible, like the rustle of dead leaves. But with each passing hour, they grew louder, more insidious. They slithered into her ears, slithering through the cracks in her determination, whispering doubts, painting vivid pictures of Krypton's destruction, whispering of her own failures.

"You couldn't save them, Kara," one voice hissed, raspy with malice. "You weren't strong enough."

Another joined in, a seductive coo. "Give in, girl. Let the darkness take you. It's a sweet peace, the absence of responsibility."

Kara gritted her teeth, focusing on the faint blue glow emanating from the Kryptonian amulet that hung around her neck. It was a relic from her home planet, a symbol of hope passed down through generations. It felt like a beacon in the suffocating darkness, a tether to who she was.

But the whispers persisted, weaving a web of despair. They conjured visions of Argo City, her Kryptonian refuge, plummeting into the red sun. They showed her Alex, her human sister, buried under tons of rubble, her screams lost in the void. Tears welled in Kara's eyes, blurring the already dim landscape.

Doubt gnawed at her. Was this a trick? Was this reality, or a figment of Myrkr's twisted power? Was she hallucinating? The fabric of reality itself seemed to ripple and distort.

Suddenly, a grotesque creature materialized from the shadows. It was a hulking monstrosity, its body a patchwork of fangs and claws, its eyes burning with an unnatural purple light. The creature let out a bone-chilling roar, charging towards Kara, its every movement a mockery of grace.

Instinct kicked in, adrenaline coursing through Kara. Ignoring the whispers, she propelled herself forward, meeting the creature head-on. Her fist connected with the beast's jaw with a sickening crack, sending it sprawling. However, the fight lacked the familiar exhilaration that usually accompanied her battles. This was a fight for survival, not justice, and the lack of purpose added a bitter weight to her movements.

Minutes turned into a brutal brawl. Kara's enhanced strength and speed were undeniable, but the endless hordes of creatures that emerged from the shadows seemed to replenish themselves infinitely. Every blow felt futile, every victory hollow.

As fatigue gnawed at her, the whispers returned, louder now, almost triumphant. They spoke of surrender, of succumbing to the sweet oblivion of darkness. For a fleeting moment, Kara entertained the thought. The relentless battle, the unending darkness, the constant gnawing doubt – it all felt too exhausting.

But then, a flicker of red caught her eye. Tucked behind a craggy rock, barely visible, was a single poppy flower. A single splash of color in the monochrome landscape. It was a symbol of resilience, of life persisting even in the bleakest of places.

The poppy reignited a spark within Kara. It was a reminder of Earth, of humanity's fight for hope even amidst darkness. Krypton may be gone, Alex may seem lost, but there was still good in the world. People needed her, needed a symbol of hope.

Strength surged back into her. She fought with renewed vigor, her blows landing with a ferocity fueled by defiance. But even as she pushed back the tide of creatures, she knew the whispers wouldn't disappear. This realm fueled them, and Myrkr wouldn't stop until she succumbed.

Then, a memory flickered to life – a childhood lesson from her mother, Alura. "Kara," Alura's voice echoed in her mind, "darkness thrives in the absence of light. Be the beacon, Kara. Shine your light so brightly that it pierces even the deepest shadows."

Kara closed her eyes, focusing on the Kryptonian amulet. It wasn't
