Elisa Maza: Vanquisher of Evil by Jade Gretz

Rain lashed against the gargoyle grotesques adorning the gothic spires of New York City. Elisa Maza, detective second class, huddled deeper into her trench coat, her breath misting in the chilly night air. Tonight wasn't a routine patrol. Tonight, the grotesques whispered – not their usual cryptic pronouncements, but a chilling chorus of terror.

Their words spoke of a darkness unlike anything Goliath, their stone leader, had ever encountered. An ancient evil that slumbered beneath the city, awakened by forgotten rituals and hungry for vengeance. The grotesques mentioned a name – Xanadu. A name that sent shivers down Elisa's spine.

Xanadu wasn't a myth whispered by gargoyles. It was a place – a hidden city nestled deep within the labyrinthine tunnels beneath Manhattan. A city rumored to have been built by a forgotten civilization, its secrets buried beneath layers of time and forgotten magic.

Elisa had stumbled upon clues to its existence years ago, while investigating a string of bizarre disappearances. But the evidence had been sparse, and Goliath, ever cautious, had advised her to leave it buried. Now, it seemed, the buried horror had risen.

Descending into a hidden entrance beneath a crumbling tenement building, Elisa felt a wave of oppressive darkness wash over her. The air hung heavy with the smell of damp earth and decay. Her flashlight beam danced across uneven stone walls adorned with cryptic symbols that flickered with an unnatural luminescence.

The passage led to a vast cavern, its ceiling lost in the shadows. The air hummed with an energy that resonated deep within Elisa's bones, a sense of impending doom so thick it tasted metallic on her tongue. In the center of the cavern stood a monolithic structure – a black obsidian pyramid that pulsed with an eerie light.

As she approached, whispers echoed through the cavern, slithering into her mind, seductive and horrifying at the same time. They spoke of power, of knowledge beyond human comprehension, of a chance to rewrite fate. Elisa stopped, her heart hammering in her chest. The whispers were tempting, offering an escape from the mundanity of her human life.

But then, a chilling laugh broke the spell. A figure emerged from the shadows at the foot of the pyramid – a tall, emaciated woman with skin as pale as moonlight and eyes that glowed like embers. Dressed in tattered black robes, she emanated an aura of malevolent power.

"Elisa Maza," the woman rasped, her voice a dry whisper that scraped against Elisa's nerves. "Welcome to Xanadu."

Elisa recognized her from old, blurry photographs gleaned from her abandoned investigation – Xanadu's last surviving priestess, a woman named Selene. Back then, she was an aging scholar, obsessed with unearthing the city's secrets. Now, she looked like a desiccated corpse animated by dark magic.

"What have you done?" Elisa demanded, her voice trembling slightly.

Selene cackled, the sound echoing through the cavern. "I have awakened Xanadu," she declared, her voice dripping with a chilling satisfaction. "I have reconnected it to the source of its power – a force older than time itself."

Elisa's blood ran cold. What power could be older than time itself? And what did Selene intend to do with it? Fear curdled in her stomach, but she forced herself to stand tall.

"You won't get away with this, Selene," she said, her voice surprisingly steady. "The gargoyles will stop you."

Selene let out a sneer. "The gargoyles? Those stone relics? They are no match for the power I have unleashed. With one word, I can turn Gotham into a wasteland."

Elisa felt a surge of defiance. Fear remained, but it was overshadowed by a fierce determination to protect the city she had come to call home. "Goliath will come for you," she said, her voice ringing with conviction.

"Goliath," Selene scoffed. "He is too late. The ritual is complete. The darkness rises!"

As if on cue, the ground began to tremble. Cracks snaked across the cavern floor, spewing forth a viscous black smoke that writhed like a living creature. The obsidian pyramid pulsed with a blinding light, and a wave of dark energy ripped through the cavern.

Elisa screamed, the force of the energy knocking her off her feet. As she lay there, her vision blurred, she saw Selene raise her arms in a triumphant gesture. The black smoke coalesced around her, forming a grotesque figure with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp claws.

A primal shriek echoed thr
