D.VA: Queen of the Battle Arena by Jade Gretz

Rain lashed against the reinforced glass of D.Va's Meka, blurring the neon lights of Busan into a kaleidoscope of colors. Tonight's patrol wasn't routine. Rumors of strange disappearances had been swirling around the Gwanghwamun Gate, whispers of a shadowy figure that lurked in the night, stealing voices and leaving behind only lifeless husks.

D.Va, despite her playful demeanor when streaming, carried a deep sense of responsibility. Overwatch was stretched thin, and the responsibility of protecting Busan often fell on her shoulders. As she piloted Meka through the glistening streets, a shiver ran down her spine – something about the deserted plazas and flickering streetlights felt unnervingly wrong.

Reaching the Gwanghwamun Gate, an ancient landmark bathed in an eerie red glow, D.Va felt a prickle of unease. The air crackled with an unnatural energy, and an unsettling silence hung heavy. Her radar flickered erratically, its usual blips replaced by a chilling static.

Suddenly, a voice, cold and disembodied, echoed through the Meka's internal speakers. "Welcome, D.Va. You shouldn't have come."

D.Va spun the Meka around, searching for the source of the voice. Her blaster rifle hummed in her grip, ready for anything. But there was nothing. Just the looming figures of the stone warriors guarding the gate, their stoic faces seeming to mock her predicament.

The voice spoke again, closer this time, a whisper that slithered into her ear. "I can give you power, D.Va. Power beyond your wildest dreams."

D.Va scoffed. "Nice try, Reaper. You're not exactly known for your charming recruitment tactics."

The voice chuckled, a dry, rattling sound devoid of humor. "Foolish child. I am not Reaper. I am something far older, far more powerful."

Doubt gnawed at D.Va. Reaper wouldn't have spoken in riddles. But who, or what, was messing with her comms? Panic threatened to rise, but she forced it down. Now wasn't the time to freak out.

"Show yourself, coward!" she yelled, hoping the bravado would mask the tremor in her voice.

As if summoned by her words, a swirling vortex of crimson mist materialized in the center of the plaza. The mist writhed and formed into a grotesque figure – a skeletal humanoid cloaked in shadows, its eyes glowing like embers.

D.Va had fought omnics, robots, and the occasional deranged scientist, but this… this was something else. It oozed with an ancient evil, a primal hunger that sent shivers down her spine.

"Fear not, D.Va," the creature rasped, its voice a cacophony of whispers. "I can grant you power that will make you a legend. Power to crush your enemies and reshape the world in your image."

D.Va didn't like the sound of that. But she couldn't deny the allure of power. The endless stream of negativity in the comments section, the frustration of never feeling good enough, the constant pressure to be perfect – the creature's words tapped into a part of her she desperately wanted to ignore.

The Meka's systems hummed erratically, the AI struggling to maintain control as the entity's dark energy pulsed towards the machine. D.Va fought the urge to give in, to accept the power it offered.

Then, a voice, distorted but familiar, cut through the entity's whispers. "D.Va, don't listen to it! It's a trap!"

It was Lena's voice, her real voice, broadcasted from her auxiliary headset. The entity recoiled, its form flickering for a moment. D.Va had forgotten – even in the Meka, she was never truly alone. Lena, her loyal AI companion, was always by her side.

"Lena's right," a voice boomed through the city speakers, startling both D.Va and the entity. Winston, his voice filled with concern, crackled through the Meka's communication system.

"Don't worry, D.Va," he continued. "We're on our way. Just hold on!"

D.Va took a deep breath, her grip tightening on the control stick. The entity lashed out, tendrils of shadow-like energy wrapping around the Meka, constricting it. The AI struggled to maintain control, the cockpit alarms blaring.

But D.Va refused to yield. She channeled the anger from the negativity she faced every day, but this time, transmuted it into something else – determination. "Not today, shadow monster!" she yelled, the voice amplified by the Meka's speakers.

With a burst of power, D.Va activated the Meka's defense matrix, a blue energy shield that repelled
