Supergirl: Shining Legacy, by Jade Gretz

Metropolis, usually a shimmering beacon of progress, felt shrouded in an unnatural mist tonight. Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, hovered above the city, her crimson cape billowing in the unnaturally still air. Below, streetlights flickered erratically, casting long, skeletal shadows that danced across deserted streets. An unsettling quiet hung over the city, broken only by the occasional, panicked scream that echoed from a darkened alleyway.

This wasn't a typical night for Supergirl. Usually, it was alien invasions or rogue LexCorp experiments that threatened Metropolis. But tonight, the culprit was something far more insidious – a creeping fear that had seeped into the hearts of the city's inhabitants.

It had started subtly. Reports of people seeing shadowy figures lurking on the edges of their vision, whispers that turned malicious when repeated, a general sense of unease that permeated every interaction. Then came the nightmares. Horrors so vivid, so personalized, that they left the victims drained and paranoid, afraid to sleep, afraid to even close their eyes.

Supergirl had seen the effects firsthand. A once jovial bus driver, haunted by the image of his own mangled body in a fiery crash, was now a gibbering wreck. A renowned scientist, consumed by the vision of her research unleashing a global pandemic, had locked herself in her lab, refusing to emerge. The city, once vibrant and pulsating with life, was becoming a ghost town of fear.

Landing on the rooftop of the Daily Planet, Kara was met by Lois Lane, her brow furrowed with worry. Lois, ever the intrepid reporter, had been digging into the strange occurrences, but her usual sharp wit was dimmed by a dark shadow under her eyes.

"Kara," Lois said, her voice a hushed whisper, "this is bad. Really bad. People are cracking, and I'm starting to feel it too. Every time I close my eyes, I see…" she trailed off, a tremor running through her voice.

Kara placed a comforting hand on Lois' shoulder. "Tell me what you see, Lois. Maybe there's a pattern, a clue to what's causing these nightmares."

Lois hesitated, then whispered, "I see myself betraying Clark. Exposing his secrets to the world. Turning him into a monster."

Kara's heart sank. Lois and Clark's relationship was built on trust, a beacon of hope in a chaotic world. To see this fundamental aspect of Lois crumble within her nightmares was deeply unsettling.

"It's the same for everyone," Lois continued. "People's deepest fears, their darkest secrets, all brought to the surface in their sleep. It's like someone is… feeding off our terror."

Supergirl's super hearing picked up a faint, high-pitched whine originating from the heart of Metropolis – LexCorp Tower. Lex Luthor, ever the opportunist, would certainly capitalize on such a situation, but Kara didn't think this was his usual brand of chaos. This felt… different, more insidious.

"I'll check it out," Kara said, her voice firm. "Hopefully, it's something Luthor can be blamed for and punched into submission."

Lois nodded, a flicker of her usual fire returning to her eyes. "Be careful, Kara. This feels… wrong."

With a reassuring smile, Supergirl soared through the air, heading towards the imposing silhouette of LexCorp Tower. As she approached, the high-pitched whine grew louder, a pulsating beacon against the backdrop of the eerie silence.

Inside the tower, the lights were strangely dim, casting long, distorted shadows on the sterile white walls. Supergirl entered cautiously, her senses on high alert. The whine seemed to be emanating from the top floor, Lex Luthor's personal laboratory.

Pushing open the lab doors, Kara was met with a sight that sent a shiver down her spine. Luthor was strapped to a table, his face contorted in a mask of terror, wires snaking from his head to a complex machine that hummed ominously at the center of the room.

The machine itself was a bizarre contraption, a jumble of alien technology haphazardly fused with human components. It pulsed with a malevolent energy, the source of the disquieting whine that permeated the building.

"Luthor?" Supergirl called out, her voice echoing in the sterile room.

Luthor's eyes snapped open, a flicker of recognition followed by sheer panic. "Supergirl! Get me out of here!" he rasped, his voice strained. "This… this thing is feeding off my fears, amplifying them a thousandfold. It's…"

His voice was cut short by a surge of energy from the machine
