The night sky over the distant shores of Besaid was unusually dark, as if the heavens themselves were mourning, casting an ominous shadow over the island. A chill wind swept across the jungle canopy, rustling the leaves like the whispers of ancient spirits. Lulu, the beautiful sorceress with jet-black hair and eyes like twin moons, stood at the entrance of the jungle, her heart beating in sync with the soft glow of the fireflies around her. She had long since learned to trust her instincts, and tonight, those instincts told her something was wrong.
Besaid had always been a place of calm, but recently, the air felt different—heavier, almost suffocating. Villagers had spoken in hushed tones about strange occurrences. Shadows had been seen lurking at the edges of the jungle, eyes gleaming like predators, and a growing sense of unease had settled over the village like a storm cloud.
But it wasn’t until the village elder, Wakka, came to her in the dead of night with fear in his eyes that Lulu truly understood the gravity of the situation.
"Someone is hunting us, Lu," Wakka had said, his voice trembling. "They say it's an assassin, someone who wields cursed blades. He’s already claimed two lives in the next village, and... and they say he’s coming for you next."
Lulu had listened silently, her expression unreadable as Wakka recounted the tales of this shadowy figure—a mercenary, an assassin who had made a pact with the darkness, using cursed blades that drained the souls of those they touched. The villagers were terrified, and though Lulu rarely showed her emotions, a cold shiver had run down her spine at the thought.
Now, as she stood at the jungle's edge, she could feel the presence of something malevolent, lurking just beyond her vision. Her grip tightened on her moogle doll, the vessel through which she cast her magic. Tonight, she would need every ounce of her power.
A sudden movement caught her eye. A flicker of shadow darting between the trees. Her heart raced, but she steadied her breath. If the assassin had come, she would not let fear control her.
The silence was broken by the soft, measured sound of footsteps approaching from the darkness. Lulu’s eyes narrowed, her senses heightened. She raised her hand, her magic crackling just beneath the surface of her skin.
And then, he stepped into the moonlight.
The assassin was tall, draped in dark, flowing robes that seemed to blend into the shadows themselves. His face was obscured by a hood, but Lulu could see the faint glow of red eyes beneath, staring at her with cold intent. In his hands, he held two curved blades, their edges shimmering with an unnatural, sickly light. The weapons seemed alive, pulsating with dark energy, and Lulu could almost hear the whispers of tortured souls emanating from them.
“Lulu of Besaid,” the assassin’s voice was low, almost a hiss. “You have been marked.”
Lulu stood her ground, her expression calm but fierce. “Who sent you?”
The assassin tilted his head slightly, a gesture that might have been amusement. “The one who pays the most. Does it matter? In the end, death comes for all.”
She didn’t respond. Words were pointless with men like this. Instead, she raised her moogle doll, her magic flaring to life. The air around her crackled with power, and the ground beneath her feet trembled as she summoned her strength.
The assassin moved first. He was fast—unnaturally fast, like a blur of darkness streaking toward her. Lulu barely had time to raise her defenses as the cursed blades sliced through the air, aiming for her throat. She dodged to the side, summoning a barrier of energy that crackled as the assassin’s blades made contact, sending sparks flying in all directions.
The force of his attack sent a shockwave through the air, but Lulu stood firm, her magic pulsing around her like a protective shield. She could feel the dark energy radiating from the assassin, the malevolent force that powered his cursed weapons. It was unlike anything she had ever encountered.
But Lulu was no stranger to darkness. She had walked the path of the black mage for years, mastering spells that could destroy even the most powerful of foes. And tonight, she would not falter.
With a wave of her hand, she summoned a volley of fireballs that streaked through the air, aimed directly at the assassin. He dodged with inhuman agility, but one of the fireballs grazed his arm, sending a burst of flame across his robes. He hissed
