The air was thick with an eerie stillness as Queen Marika stood on the edge of the great chasm, the mist swirling like a living entity at her feet. Her golden hair shimmered in the faint moonlight, casting an ethereal glow around her figure as she surveyed the desolate landscape before her. The craggy mountains loomed ominously in the distance, their jagged peaks silhouetted against a stormy sky. Somewhere beyond those peaks, hidden within the ancient realm of the forgotten, the dragon awaited.

Marika had been warned. The scholars had whispered tales of the ancient beast, a creature older than the Lands Between itself. A dragon whose scales shimmered like molten gold, whose breath could scorch the earth, and whose eyes held the weight of a thousand years of forgotten history. But Marika was not one to shy away from danger. As the queen of the Lands Between, she had faced countless challenges—wars, rebellions, treachery—but none had tested her quite like this.

Her resolve as ruler would be measured tonight, not by the strength of her armies or the loyalty of her subjects, but by her own will. By her courage in the face of an ancient force that sought to unravel the very fabric of her reign.

The wind howled through the chasm, a mournful wail that sent shivers down her spine, but Marika did not flinch. Her hand tightened around the hilt of her blade, a weapon forged in the flames of a dying star, its edge gleaming with a cold, otherworldly light. She had brought no guards, no entourage. This was her battle alone.

Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet began to tremble, a low rumble that grew louder with each passing second. The air grew thick with the scent of sulfur, and a shadow passed over the moon, plunging the world into darkness. Marika’s heart quickened, but she stood her ground, her eyes fixed on the horizon.

Then, from the depths of the chasm, it emerged.

The dragon was unlike anything Marika had ever seen. Its massive wings stretched wide, blotting out the sky, each leathery membrane glistening with an otherworldly glow. Its scales, golden and iridescent, reflected the faint light of the stars, making the creature seem as if it were woven from the very essence of the cosmos. Its eyes—deep, molten orbs—burned with an ancient fire, filled with knowledge and malice in equal measure.

It landed with a thunderous crash, its enormous claws digging into the earth, leaving deep gouges in the stone. The dragon’s head lowered, its massive jaws parting to reveal rows of jagged teeth, each one gleaming like a dagger.

“Queen Marika,” the dragon’s voice rumbled, a sound that seemed to come from the very core of the earth itself. “You dare to stand before me, the last of the ancient ones?”

Marika’s gaze did not waver. “I dare because I must,” she replied, her voice steady despite the monstrous presence before her. “My people depend on me. My realm is at risk. I will do what I must to protect them.”

The dragon let out a low, guttural laugh, a sound that reverberated through the ground beneath her. “Your people... your realm... these things are fleeting, queen. You speak of them as if they matter. But I have seen realms rise and fall. I have watched civilizations crumble to dust. What makes you think you or your kingdom are any different?”

Marika’s eyes narrowed, and she took a step forward, her blade raised in defiance. “I know the fragility of power. I know how easily it can be lost. But I also know the strength of will, the force of determination. My kingdom stands not because it is invincible, but because I have the resolve to protect it.”

The dragon’s eyes gleamed, and it lowered its head until its massive snout was mere feet from her. “Resolve, you say? Then let us test this resolve of yours, queen.”

Without warning, the dragon reared back, its massive wings beating the air as it took to the sky. Marika barely had time to react before a torrent of searing flames erupted from its maw, engulfing the ground where she stood. The heat was overwhelming, the flames so intense they seemed to melt the very air around her.

But Marika did not flee. She raised her blade high, the ancient weapon shimmering with a brilliant light. With a single, powerful strike, she brought the blade down, slicing through the flames as if they were nothing more than smoke. The fire parted around her, leaving her untouched.

The dragon’s eyes widened in surprise, and it let out a deafening roar. “Impressive,” it growled, circli
